8 Day Legends of the Wolf Horseback Riding Adventure on the Via Dinarica

Hotel Brile, Buda Tomovića, Kolašin, Montenegro

Montenegro Horse Riding Adventure

Hidden sights, rugged mountains, and vast landscapes are the scenic “ingredients” for this riding adventure in Montenegro. Your perfect companion for this adventure are the Montenegrin mountain horses, surefooted, relaxed, and willing to please. One can best compare these with the Bosnian horses, but by crossing them with Shagya Arabs, these are somewhat larger and more light-footed. Ride through the wild, varied landscapes of the Biogradska Gora and Durmitor National Parks and cross the largest alpine pasture in Europe, the Sinjajevina high plateau. You will experience traditional hospitality on the alpine pastures along the way!

Man spends the winter in the valleys, from May to October, he moves with all his household and cattle to the Alpine pastures in the surrounding mountains. On the largest Alpine pasture in Europe, the Sinjajevina, you will get to know them in a very genuine way.

3etravel d.o.o keeps the right to adjust the program according to weather and other circumstances which may inflict safety since especially the crossing of the Sinjajevina requests particularly good weather conditions.

A hard hat is obligatory, please bring your own. Upon request, 3etravel d.o.o provides body protectors. A support vehicle will accompany the riders in distance during the rides on Days 5 and 6.

Day 1: Arrival

Arrive at Podgorica Airport. Scheduled transfer after the last arrival from Podgorica Airport to Kolasin. If someone arrives earlier, 3etravel d.o.o can organize a taxi transfer to the city center of Podgorica or to a hotel with a pool near the airport where you can comfortably wait for the group transfer. All participants are "picked up" and transferred to Kolasin for 1.5 hours through the beautiful Moraca Canyon.

For self-drivers, the meeting point is at the Hotel Brile in Kolasin. Before dinner, you will meet your guide and introduced to your 4-legged companion for the next days, the matchmaking for the coming days. The welcome dinner will take place at the hotel in Kolasin.

Day 2: Ascent to Bjelasica mountains

Your first tour leads into the gentle mountains of Bjelasica. The ascent is on gravel roads and the further up you come, follow shepherd trails. Bjelasica is a traditional alpine pasture area. Take a break on an alpine pasture and see how such an alpine farm works in Montenegro. On the gentle mountain ridges that you climb, you are rewarded with beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. This first overnight in the mountains is at an alpine village in the Bjelasica ski area.

  • Accommodation: Wooden chalets in double/twin/single rooms with a shared bathroom/toilet.
  • Terrain: Gravel, forest, and meadow paths
  • Approximately 30 kilometers - 5 to 6 hours

Day 3: Peaks and lakes of National Park Biogradska Gora

A varied riding day to the mountain lakes below the peaks of the Bjelasica (about 2000 meters high). Beautiful gallop routes along meadow paths and all the time stunning views. The tour concludes with a descent through the primeval forest of the NP Biogradska Gora to Lake Biogradska.

At the lake, the horses are loaded and transferred to Durmitor National Park, will you. Drive through the stunning Tara Gorge to the Durmitor National Park (1.5 hours). On the way, make a stop at the famous bridge over the Tara. In the town of Zabljak, you can make a stop if someone needs something from a shop.

  • Accommodation: Wooden chalets with a shared bathroom/toilet
  • Terrain: Forest/meadow/gravel
  • Approximately 25 kilometers - 5 to 6 hours

Day 4: Mystic Durmitor mountains

Today, you are accompanied by the peaks of the Durmitor Mountains. The wide plateau around the main town of Zabljak is an ideal riding area. On your way, pass the medieval necropolis of the Bogumils which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for several years. In the Durmitor area, there are more than 50 lakes, which are also called mountain eyes - the most famous is the "Black Lake".

Most of the time, you'll ride on grassy paths or through untracked terrain, and all the mountains of the Durmitor form the impressive background. Return to the same accommodation. Dinner at the accommodation.

  • Terrain: Meadow/gravel/short asphalt
  • Approximately 25 to 30 kilometers - 5 to 6 hours

Day 5: Europe´s biggest mountain pasture - The high plateau of Sinjajevina (Part 1)

Today begins a unique adventure, the crossing of the Sinjajevina, also called “Little Mongolia”. First, wander through dense forests, but immediately after that, extensive open grassland opens up, which is lined with over 2000 high mountains. The grassy landscape is ideal terrain for longer gallops.

Overnight with a family in double/triple rooms with a total of 15 beds in five rooms that can be used and shared toilet/bathroom. Have dinner with the family.

  • Terrain: Meadow/gravel/pathless terrain
  • Approximately 25 to 30 kilometers - 5 to 6 hours

Day 6: Sinjajevina (Part 2)

Today, cross the very center of Sinjajevina. Sheep are rarely seen here too. The feeling that the wolves dance here in winter becomes very clear. Impressive solitude is pure in its purest appearance. The few alpine farms crouch behind the rolling hills and water is rare here. The shepherds keep snow insulated under meter-thick hay to store water for themselves and the animals.

Today´s destination is a lovingly managed alpine pasture with delicious meals, everything from their own production. Overnight stay on the mountain pastures with multi bedding in three rooms with a shared bathroom/toilet, simple but functional.

  • Terrain: Meadow, grassy paths, gravel
  • Approximately 30 kilometers - 5 to 6 hours

Day 7: Lipovo valley

Descend along an old shepherd's trail down to Lipovo valley. During the descent, you'll partly have to lead the horses. Spiky mountains are followed by a gentle, fertile valley, one of the most beautiful in Montenegro. Reach the starting point of this trail, Kolasin. Time to say farewell to your companions. Overnight and dinner in Kolasin.

  • Terrain: Meadows, gravel, trail (the horses are led here)
  • Approximately 25 kilometers - 5 to 6 hours

Day 8: Departure

In the morning, have a scheduled transfer (two hours) to Podgorica airport.

Stunningly beautiful and remarkably diverse, Montenegro astounds and delights at every turn. The frenzy of the beach culture abruptly gives way to an untamed interior where wolves and bears still roam the dark mountain forests which gave Montenegro (“Black Mountain”) its name. Only 625,000 people live in this nascent adventure destination, which holds some of the most rugged terrains in Europe.

High mountains with limestone peaks, canyons, glacial lakes, plateaus, and vast forests are packed into an area approximately the size of Connecticut, (or roughly 1/3 the size of Wales) but the wild and, at times, harsh beauty of the landscape is in direct contrast to the warm Balkan hospitability of its inhabitants.
