Come and participate in this horse riding holiday and discover the fascinating scenery of the southern coast of Menorca along the trekking path known as Camí de Cavalls - the horses' way - which skirts the perimeter of the island.
You will stay at an ancient Menorcan farmhouse restored as a tranquil rural hotel. Hotel Rural Binigaus Vell exists in peaceful harmony with its surroundings and features 20 rooms that have been refurbished respecting the original Menorcan style. They have all possible amenities (TV, telephone, internet access, safety deposit box, bathroom, etc.). The hotel is situated less than one kilometer from the beautiful village of Es Migjorn Gran and less than three kilometers from the sandy beaches of Binigaus and Sant Tomàs.
The swimming pool with salt water chlorination and its organic form has been designed with the environment in mind. Its shape, colors, and textures are reminiscent of the pristine beaches of Menorca. Its restaurant offers you the opportunity to taste the local specialties in a pleasant and charming atmosphere. Situated in the midst of natural surroundings, the hotel offers Mediterranean comfort and tranquillity. Its location in the center of the island provides easy access from all parts of the island.
All twin rooms are situated on the first floor of the central building and the old house of the original owners. These are all very bright rooms and the views from them are certainly the very best. They contain two beds (200 centimeters x 90 centimeters).
The room is located in the center of the hotel, close to the swimming pool, and with a sunny terrace from where the sea can be seen. The junior suite, with a large lounge area, a double sofa bed, and a full bathroom with shower and bathtub, makes it an ideal room for a family of three or four. Also, it is ideal for those who want to feel more relaxed with the extra bit of space.
You will be transferred from the airport to the hotel. Check in to the rooms in the accommodation. Have dinner at the hotel's restaurant.
The second day includes a visit to the stables and allocation of horses followed by a short ride around the estate. To begin the program, you will visit the stud of San Adeodato, where you will be told more about Menorquín horses. Afterward, horses will be allotted according to the riders’ skills and you will then go for a short ride around the estate while visiting the prehistoric village of Sant Agustí Vell.
Your lunch will feature a spread of local Minorcan products in a beach restaurant. In the afternoon, you will take an inland trail of the Camí de Cavalls and you will cross the Barranc de Son Fidel, a famous ravine that contains one of the highest and most impressive caves of Menorca, Cova des Coloms, which is also known as the cathedral, that you will visit before ending at the stables of the hotel.
The meeting point will be the stables of Hotel Rural Binigaus Vell. On today’s trip, you will pass through the major ravines of the island: Algendar, Trebalúger, and Albranca. Owing to the streams that flow through the ravines in many stretches of the Camí de Cavalls, you need to leave the coast and venture inland to avoid the precipitous slopes caused by these vertical cuts.
In the morning, you will leave the Camí de Cavalls briefly to visit some of the most beautiful, wild, and difficult-to-reach beaches: Escorxada, Fustam, and Trebalúger. Later on, you will reach the beach of Cala Mitjana for lunch. Then, you will return to the stables of the hotel via the inland route of the Camí de Cavalls.
On your last journey, you will ride along the Camí de Cavalls in the east direction. It starts gently but finishes covering the extremely rugged landscape formed by the ravines that characterize the central southern coastline. After crossing the town of Sant Tomàs, the path turns inland before arriving at Son Bou. Shortly before that, however, you will leave the main track to visit the ravine of Sa Vall and its wetland, passing in front of the Talis farm from where you will follow the oddly-shaped cliffs that lead you along the seashore and sand dunes of this tranquil tourist area to Son Bou.
At one end of the beach of Son Bou (the longest beach on the island, nearly 1.9 miles), you will find a Christian basilica dating from 400 AD. Afterward, you will start off again along the path bordering the Prat de Son Bou, an important wetland that exemplifies the rich biodiversity on Menorca. This is another ideal spot for bird watching. Soon after, you will cross the longest beach of Son Bou in the direction of Sant Tomàs and San Adeodato. The day will finish with a particular lesson of Menorcan dressage (duration: one hour) and includes, if you wish, trying the original and unique bot (jump).
Have breakfast and then you will be transferred from the hotel to the airport.
There are certainly few things more enjoyable than horse riding along the marvelous natural paths which are all throughout the area. The family owners of the hotel have one of the most important studs on the island for breeding Menorquín horses. While riding on the back of these magnificent animals, a mixture of nobility and strength, the sounds of the world are heard at the same time that millions of images, as if in a kaleidoscope, never to be forgotten, are absorbed.
The horses are from Binigaus Vell's own stud (Yeguada San Adeodato) and are Menorquín, a Spanish thoroughbred, and also crossbred. The Menorquín horse is well-balanced, elegant, and obedient. It also has a peaceful character. It has a sleek silhouette and a black coat. It is a noble horse, warm-blooded, robust, and energetic, with a great aptitude both as a saddle horse and draught animal.
Riders must be able to master the horse at a medium level in all gaits (walk, trot, and canter). It is advisable to be physically fit. It is possible that on certain occasions, beginner’s weeks will be organized with a varied program suitable for beginners.
Binigaus Vell has at their disposal, guides specialized in the horse trek, speaking English, French, or Spanish. They know the horses and terrain, thus providing the necessary security and maintaining the pace and tempo of the route at all times.
The horse riding holiday will take place in Menorca, Spain. During the holiday, you will ride along an inland trail of the Camí de Cavalls.
Menorca is located at the eastern end of the Balearic Islands and is the most easterly of all Spanish regions, therefore, it is the first part of Spain to see the sunrise. It has a maximum length of 48 kilometers (nearly 30 miles) from Ciutadella (west) to Mahón (east). It has 220 kilometers of coastline, with more than 50 beaches, of which two-thirds are unspoiled. It is the ideal destination for families who want to relax by combining cultural visits with natural scenery and beaches that would grace the Caribbean. The romantic quality of Menorca is also surprising, with such a variety of idyllic places.
Menorca contains the best-preserved natural areas in the Mediterranean and was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO on October 8, 1993. In its 702 square kilometers, you can find a natural park S’Albufera d’Es Grau (wetland), five nature reserves, a marine reserve along the north coast, and 19 ANEI areas (natural areas of special interest). The island is a natural paradise shaped by a multitude of ravines, caves, underwater caverns, and unique plant and animal species.
Supposedly, its origins date back to the 14th century, following the reconquest of Menorca by the king of Aragon, Alfonso III. Historians believe that horses already played an important role in the defense of the island, linked to the Camí de Cavalls skirting the coast. During the 18th century, under British rule, it became an essential communication network around the island to defend it from both Moorish incursions and European invasions.
The Camí de Cavalls allowed the local and military authorities effective surveillance of the coast and easy maintenance of the watch-towers and other military installations. Today, the route is open for the entire 200-kilometer perimeter of Menorca, a surprising distance given the small size of the island. The trail is very dear to the Menorcan people since, apart from its historic value, it has great ecological, environmental, and scientific importance; allowing one to discover varied landscapes and return once again to its origins, a major horse trail.
You will be served four breakfasts, three lunches, four dinners, wine, and water included in the price. A Mediterranean diet featuring Menorcan and Spanish cuisine will be provided. Meals on a full board basis will be provided, starting with dinner on the day of arrival and ending with breakfast on departure day. On route days, the lunch will be picnics.
