During this holiday, you will sleep in Los Chajá Ecolodge. Beautiful cabins built with refined bio construction techniques (built-in mud, straw, and wood) in the countryside, 10 minutes walk from the center of town. Comfortable accommodation with private bathroom and fully equipped kitchen. Relax, silence, and tranquility for a regenerating rest. In the morning, you can enjoy a delicious (optional) homemade breakfast on the deck with beautiful views of the horses eating in the wetlands, the dunes, and the great Cerro de la Buena Vista as well as the palm groves and the mountains.

Every day, a tremendous sunset to contemplate with a mate and at night the most starry sky in Valizas, free of light pollution. Each cabin is equipped with a sommier (very high-density mattresses), kitchen, dishes, electric stove, minibar, bathroom with shower, and a hairdryer.

Program

Day 1: Arriving in the province of Rocha, starting the adventure

Guests take the morning coach (4.5hrs) or private hire from Montevideo to, a small fishermen´s village on the Atlantic coast, rounded by extensive prairies, palm grove forest, and huge sand dunes. A welcome lunch will be served on arrival.

In the afternoon, you meet the horses and do an introductory ride through the forest and beach. On this short and easy ride, you will be able to get used to our horses’ great character and the Uruguayan saddle with its luxurious, comfortable sheepskin cover. After you return, you will enjoy the first of many beautiful sunsets from your bungalow veranda. Overnight and dinner at Los Chajá Ecolodge. (2 hours horse riding)

Day 2: Cabo Polonio and the stunning Valizas sand dunes

The horse ride starts with leading our horses across the mouth of a small estuary, ridden or towed by a boat, depending on the tides. A full-day ride that takes us through a fascinating dune system, now a national park, to Cabo Polonio, a fishermen’s village now paradise for bohemian artists and creatives. Only accessible to people through these shifting sand dunes making the village a fascinating outpost.

Lunch is at a typical local restaurant, with fresh fish, seaweed buñuelos, and other delicious local food on the menu. Horseback rides back to Valizas via pine forests and the Valizas river coast. Overnight and dinner at Los Chajá Ecolodge. (4 to 5 hours day horse riding)

Day 3: A beautiful hidden lagoon and a kayak adventure!

Early in the morning, you can see horses being lead-free to the corral through the wetland just in front of your bungalow. In the morning we start riding through the pine forest on a very enjoyable trail until you reach the Hidden Lagoon. After a refreshing swim here and a short rest, we continue to the beach for a long canter back home. Lunch at Los Chajá.

In the afternoon, you go for a kayak trip in the Valizas river*, where you will be able to see dozens of different species of birds, such as the beautiful Roseate Spoonbill or the White-browed Blackbird, guided by a birdwatching guide. Herons and Ibis inhabit this area and kayaking allows you to get very close to appreciate them. Overnight and dinner at Los Chajá Ecolodge. (3 hours horse riding; *optional 2-3 hours kayaking activity)

Day 4: Inland to UNESCO Natural Biosphere Reserve wetlands and unique Ombu Forest

After the usual homemade breakfast, you start early in the morning for a ride inland, to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve wetlands. Crossing pasturelands, wetlands, and ancient working Estancias, bordering the beautiful Valizas river, you reach the second-largest coastal lagoon and the source of the river, Castillos Lagoon. After a picnic lunch under the great Ombu forest, which is home to ancient and unique flora, you can have a siesta on your saddle sheepskins.

In the afternoon, you ride back to Valizas, crossing a different way back. East Wetlands are home to hundreds of different birds, amphibians, fishes, and wild animals such as Rheas, several species of ibis such as Rosette Spoonbill egret, Southern screamer, Capybaras, Armadillos, and the most beautiful: Black-necked swan. Overnight and dinner at Los Chajá Ecolodge. (4-5 hours day horse riding)

Day 5: A morning trekking into the psammophilous forest and a ride to the great Buena Vista sand dune

Early in the morning, you go trekking into the psammophilous forest*. This forest is composed of native flora and fauna species that have adapted over the years to this tough, sandy environment. Lunch at Los Chajá.

In the afternoon, you ride across Valizas river into the National Park to ascend Buena Vista, the highest sand dune in the region with an incredible 360* view. Returning home via the dunes, in time for dinner and well-deserved rest at Los Chajá Ecolodge. (3 hours horse riding; *optional 2 hours trekking activity)

Day 6: Swimming with horses and biking in the highlands of Castillos!

After breakfast, you start riding for the last time toward the beach. If the weather conditions allow it, you will have the option of swimming with the horses across the river. Did you ever try? Returning home with some nice canters through the pasturelands will give you the best farewell to the horses. Lunch at Los Chajá Ecolodge.

In the afternoon, the last adventure of the week will be on two wheels*! The beautiful rolling highlands and palm tree forests of Castillos are the perfect scenery for a mountain bike tour. Completely off the beaten trail, you discover fascinating views and hidden places that will amaze you. The challenge of a short climb and the adrenaline of the descent is the perfect mix to make this an excellent tour for the more adventurous. Overnight and dinner at Los Chajá Ecolodge. (2-3 hours horse ride; *optional 3 hours bike tour)

Day 7: Farewell and back to Montevideo!

After breakfast, you will be connected to your transfer, public coach, or private transfer back to Montevideo or Punta del Este.

You will ride along deserted beaches, across pastures, through wetlands and woodlands; passing shipwrecks and skirting lagoons to go back to your bungalow with the best sunset over the wetlands full of birds and the amazing sand dunes! Spot a great variety of fascinating wildlife as we ride through East Wetlands UNESCO Biosphere Reserve & SNAP Cabo Polonio National Park and sample the delicious local food and Uruguayan wine with the delightful hosts.
