Magnificient Horse Riding Holiday in Spain

Join this unique horse riding holiday from O Cebreiro to Santiago, Spain, with Camino a Caballo! Reaching Santiago by horse is the promised trip. It is the first and most important European cultural route where the reasons for coming are still alive after more than a thousand years. As pilgrims on horseback, you will be protagonists for a few days of the living history of an ancient route where you will live new sensations. Around you are some of the best-protected reserves in Southern Europe, talking stone worlds, where people think that time has passed, animal spaces, river basins, lakes etc. as the first pilgrims met.

You will be accommodated in various accommodations in Spain provided by Camino a Caballo. For the first night, you will be staying at a village inn in O Cebreiro, the second night will be in Samos, the third night will be in a parador in Portomarín, the following night will be in Palas de Rey, and the last night will be in Arzúa.


Day 1

You will be picked up at Santiago de Compostela Airport (SCQ) at 15:00 then meet with the participants at 18:00 in O Cebreiro (Lugo) in the rural house of Valiña (beside a Romanesque church). The owner, Maria Pilar, will make you feel at home from the beginning. You will have a welcome dinner and overnight at the house of village-inn.

Day 2

You will visit O Cebreiro where you find the pallozas, old houses reminiscent of the Celtic forts, and other buildings and landscapes of great interest. At about 10:00 in the morning, you will start the journey on horseback through the impressive massive mountain and countless small towns across a road full of trees like chestnut, oak, and walnut. You will eat at Triacastela which is a very old village with a Romanesque church. In the afternoon, you will pass through Oribio River valley and will get to Samos where you visit its Romanesque chapel and monastery with ancient cypress where monks pray his matins and develop their herbal liqueurs with recipes maintained. Dinner and overnight will be in Samos.

Day 3

You will ride through a fertile and lush plain to Sarria, Jinetes, and Samos where you visit the convent and a castle. Under the shade of his abundant carballeira, you will continue towards the Minho River and will see the original Barbadelo temple. The lunch will be at the Mercado da Serra, next to an old mill. At dusk, you will reach Portomarín, the village retains its medieval style although it was flooded by the dam and reconstructed buildings, temples, and porticoes most interesting by the neighbors. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the parador.

Day 4

You will enter the Ulla valley. Across a wide range of Romanesque villages, you will reach Vilar de Donas a Romanesque monastery and national monument temple with paintings of the fourteenth century, the seat of the Knights of the Order of Santiago. Those knights deeply fought with the bandits of the pilgrim route. You will stay overnight in Palas de Rei.

Day 5

You will leave the region of the Ulla River with its steps immortalized by Countess Pardo Bazán. Crossing the River by the Furelos bridge, you will reach Melide. You will visit Pambre Castle, a medieval fortress that is named after the river that bathes its foundation with numerous typical mills and manors. In the afternoon, you will pass by Castañeda, the seat lime kilns for the construction of the Cathedral of Santiago where some pilgrims carried a stone in his backpack increasing their penance. Some people dare to emulate those pilgrims should be dismounted, because they never heard about a penitent horse. Dinner and overnight stay will be at Arzua.

Day 6

From Arzúa, the center of a region of delicious cheeses, you will depart for Labacolla where you will eat and finish the route. There, the Pilgrims washed in a brook, those who had left forces, ascended to the Monxoi (Monte del Gozo) to be the first to see the cathedral. Riders descended from their mounts making the last stretch on foot and all should give thanks to the Apostle for happily concluding the pilgrimage. Although this is the last stage, today you will ride to Lavacolla. From then, there will be free time for riders, you can go walking or in the support vehicle to Obradoiro Square in the Cathedral of Santiago Compostela and get to the Compostelana.


You will ride from O Cebreiro to Samos, Portomarín, Palas de Rei, Arzua, and Labacolla in Spain.
