Reaching Santiago by horse is the “promised trip”. This holiday offers you riding in the first and most important European cultural route where the reasons for coming are still alive after more than a thousand years. You will ride about 35 kilometers per day enjoying the green countryside of the Portuguese coast full of history, art, and beauty (medieval monuments, bridges, and a fascinating Roman Baroque architecture). As pilgrims on horseback, you will be the protagonists for a few days of the living history of an ancient route. Live the new sensations of exploring the historical route in Portugal and Spain on horseback!
During the tour, you will stay overnight in hostels, old houses, cottages, and mansions belonging to traditional Portuguese families.
The meeting point is in the arrivals section of the Vigo airport at 15h. To then move by car to Porto where you will visit a winery near the Douro River and some of the point of interest of the beautiful city. From there you will travel to Barcelos and visit the beautiful Benedictine convent converted into a home or Habitação Quinta Tourism, there you will have dinner and sleep in it.
Pereira (Barcelos) – Albergaría (Facha) Albergaria is a village which is located 12 km before Ponte de Lima, this day you will ride about 30 km and sleep in a rural house called Quinta da Albergaria, located in the village of Facha.
This is a transitional stage of 16-20 km, where you will cross the oldest medieval town of Portugal, called Ponte de Lima, to reach Calheiros where you will have dinner, spend the night and enjoy of the Palace of a Count.
After breakfast you will cross the Sierra de Labruja, you will go towards to the fortified population of Valencia, finalizing a few meters from the border with Spain, conquering in a legal and spoiled way this historic fortification. You will visit Tui which is in the Galician region, you will see buildings built with historic stone, religious and civil, located around the Cathedral. Dinner and overnight at Granja O Castelo.
The fifth day you will leave for Ponte Caldelas. Prior border the beautiful Vigo estuary with the unforgettable panorama of mussel rafts, St. Simon Island, the modern bridge of Rande … then Arcade will be crossed. This village is known for its exquisite oysters. After it will reach to Pontevedra, the old “Ad Pontes Duos”, after Compostela, this is the best monumental preserved city of Galicia. Farm Accommodation in Rural Tourism house “O Castelo”.
From Ponte Caldelas, saving the river Ulla you will arrive to Pontecesures, where you will sleep. In its surroundings, is Iria, a Roman settlement and bishopric before Santiago.
After breakfast, you will go to Padrón, continuing our route along the green Galician countryside, and approaching the awaited final.
Arrive on horseback to Brion – Los Angeles, very close to Santiago, where you will have lunch in the cozy and rustic Pousada Rosalia. About 16:00 pm. You will move by car to Obradoiro Square in the Cathedral of Santiago. From there, free time for riders to manage pilgrims as they wish.
Before the riding day, you will visit a winery near the Douro River and some of the point of interests of the beautiful city of Porto.
Rafael is the manager and organizer of the route, which also goes to the head of the expedition as a guide horse. With an all-terrain vehicle support and carrying luggage and a trailer with everything you need, he always at your side with his “continuing care”.
