Horse Riding Holiday in Costa Rica

Horseback riding can be a life-long adventure but learning to "Ride for Life” should start with basics that include not only love of horses, but respect and safety. During this program, children, young riders, and adults will be taught basic equestrian skills including centered riding, horse management, and trail riding using natural horsemanship techniques with Santiago Peraza, Casagua's professional trainer that can prepare them for any future disciplines and “Riding for Life”. In the afternoon, on well-trained horses, enjoy a personalized riding experience and explore the beauty that Guanacaste has to offer. Each program is limited to 1 - 4 participants to allow for personal attention.

Casita Mandrina

Casita Mandrina is a private suite with a queen bed and queen futon, kitchenette, hot water, romantic star shower, DVDs, air conditioning.

Casa Roble

Casa Roble is a spacious, fully furnished, one-bedroom ranch house with a queen and single bed in the bedroom and sofa bed in the living room. Air conditioning, Cable TV and internet, hot water, and access to the splash pool.


Day 1: Arrival - Ranch orientation

Arrive at Liberia's Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR), then transport to the finca, located just minutes from the beautiful Pacific beaches of Guanacaste. Accommodations will be in comfortable air conditioned casa or casita. Late afternoon, you will have a ranch orientation and a natural horsemanship demonstration. Dinner will be at the ranch or a local restaurant.

Day 2: Introduction to natural horsemanship session 1 - trail riding

After a full ranch breakfast, you will your first private natural horsemanship training session I: Introduction to natural horsemanship training at Finca Casagua. All sessions are individually designed for each participant’s level. All include demonstrations and hands-on work with the horses. Learn to connect with your horse and become a “funny looking lead horse with two legs”.

In the afternoon, mount your beautiful Spanish Criollo horses known for their noble temperament and comfortable ride. For today’s ride, you will leave for the small cattle town of Tempate and travel the Old Spanish Trail through large haciendas, look for monkeys, tropical birds, and dry tropical vegetation on this backcountry trail. Stop for cold drinks in Tempate then ride on to Cartagena for dinner at a typical cantina. You and the horses will be trucked back to the ranch.

Day 3: Natural horsemanship session 2 - Sabanaro cowboy ride

After breakfast, session II of the natural horsemanship clinic. Learn about imprinting foals and using the round pen, as well as hands-on working on groundwork with your horse. Explore technics used by popular clinicians. In the afternoon, go to the beautiful Hacienda Roble for the Sabanaro cowboy ride on the large cattle ranch and pick up your ranch horses to explore the working ranch and the wetlands. The horses are well-trained ranch horses. Lunch is of your choice at a typical restaurant. For the adventurous, the day includes an exciting canopy zipline tour. Dinner will be at the ranch or beach. Alternative trail rides can be selected.

Day 4: Natural horsemanship session 3 - The Taste of Guanacaste ride

After breakfast, you will do natural horsemanship Session III starting in the pasture featuring catching your horse, horse communication, then in the ring practice centered riding techniques. With a ranch photo shoot before, you mount your horses for "The Taste of Guanacaste" ride through beautiful ranch country and small village to one of Casagua's most popular family cantina stops, Chilito’s, in the small town of El Llano, sample their famous fried chicken and chip and a real taste of Guanacaste culture.

Day 5: Old Spanish oxcart trail ride - natural horsemanship session 4

Today, take an early morning breakfast ride along the old Spanish oxcart trails, passing through beautiful wooded countryside, ranches and small typical villages. Along the way, you may see Howler Monkeys, colorful tropical birds or other wildlife, while getting a glimpse of the traditional sabanero, cowboy culture, of the Guanacaste people. When you arrive at the ranch, tie up your horse for a typical Costa Rican breakfast cooked the traditional way over lena (firewood). In the afternoon, you will have session 4 of the natural horsemanship session selecting a variety of riding disciplines, eg. dressage, working equitation. Dinner will be at the ranch.

Day 6: Free day

After breakfast, enjoy a free day. You have the option of being taken to Tamarindo Beach with shopping, swimming, surfing, or a catamaran sailing and snorkeling tour or enjoy the sunset and a dinner on your own in Tamarindo, then you will be picked up by arrangement. Or choose one of the many optional tours offered in the area including canopy/zipline, monkey park, or all day tours to Blue River Resort and Spa or Arenal Volcano.

Day 7: Beach ride - Last natural horsemanship session

After breakfast, meet your horses at the beach at Puerto Viejo. Saddle up then ride the beautiful white sand beaches of PortoViejo, Conchal, and Brasilito. At the end, you will unsaddle your horses for your last natural horsemanship session and photos on the beach. The horses will be trucked back to the ranch and you will have a picnic lunch or dinner at the beach. Times depend on tides.

Day 8: Departure

After breakfast, take your last photos before you are transferred to the airport or your next destination.

The sequence of daily activities may change depending on arrival day and beach ride times depend on low tides. Day 1 itinerary depends on arrival times; if late arrival, the itinerary will be adjusted to include the activities.


You will love riding Casagua's well-trained horses; a mix of the noble Spanish horses, known for their easy ride and great temperament not only on trail rides, but also in the typical fiestas Sunday horse parades called Topes. Many of their horses were born and trained on the ranch using natural horsemanship techniques. Western, English and McClellan saddles are available. Lessons and training sessions are available using a variety of horse.

The Painted Pony Guest Ranch at Casagua Horses is located on route 155, just minutes from some of Costa Rica's famous Pacific gold coast beaches, such as Tamarindo, Flamingo, Conchal, and Playa Grande, in the heart of Guanacaste's famous ranch country.
