This summer camp combines horse riding with English language classes to encourage students to improve their English in class and practice their spoken skills during fun and engaging activities. These camps attract visitors from all over the globe, including Ireland, so students are exposed to many different cultures and make friends for life. Therefore, all international students must speak English. English language classes are taught by professional English teachers and are delivered on site in classrooms. Most teenagers don’t realize how much their English improves!

This camp runs in week-long blocks starting on Sunday evening and ending on the following Sunday at 12:00. Coolmine Equestrian Centre asks that all campers arrive on early Monday morning or on Sunday evening. This allows campers time to settle in and unpack before starting their summer camp on Monday morning. In the evenings, all nationalities and campers get together for meals and fun activities. Most develop lasting friendships and a better understanding of different cultures as well as having a brilliant time. This course is specially designed to give students a fantastic holiday in Ireland doing equestrian activities each day and learning English.

Equestrian holiday

Equestrian Academy offers all its training in English as well so that the students can practise what they have learned in the language classes. All levels of horse riding experience is catered for in this camp from novice to advanced equestrians! Afternoons will be spent learning about horses, developing horse riding skills, and exploring the countryside on horseback. Horse riding activities include an introduction to dressage, jumping and riding in the countryside.

English language

Small selected English language classes are given every morning by a professional teacher. A typical student mix is an equal number of Spanish, Brazilian, French, Italian and German with a few other nationalities thrown into the mix. This diverse camp has attracted students from all corners of the world including the Middle East, Asia, South America, Russia, and Mexico.

English is the main spoken language at the camp and is strictly enforced throughout the day so no parent has ever been unsatisfied with their teenager’s improvement of conversational English after the camp. Specialist English as a foreign language teachers will be available to help at all times. Accredited and experienced teachers and staff encourage students to have fun and improve their spoken English throughout their stay. Classes are used to improve both written technique and oral fluency. Grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure are key elements of this class.

Learning English should be more than just doing English lessons. Learning English can also mean having fun. On the equestrian and English language camp, you still receive the full immersion experience of living with and being taught by your teacher. Coolmine Equestrian Centre believes total immersion in the English language is the most rewarding and also the quickest way to improve. You will be totally isolated from your own language. Students practice English as much as they like with friendly Irish students and staff. One-to-one tutorials can be arranged.

Horse riding ability levels

  • Beginner: A rider with little or no experience
  • Novice: A rider who is comfortable and in control at the walk and / or trot but has limited experience trotting and / or cantering
  • Intermediate: A rider who is confident and in control in all paces (including posting trots, two point canters, and gallops), but does not ride regularly
  • Advanced: All of the above plus the ability to handle a spirited horse in open country

Riding style

All of the horses are ridden in English style. These saddles are specifically designed to allow the horse freedom of movement at all paces and allows the rider maximum comfort and variety on the flat and over jumps. This is the typical riding style in Ireland and across Europe. Western-type saddle experience is considered non-rider, without English riding lesson - one needs to be familiar with English saddles and comfortable with rising trot and canter.

Please give Coolmine Equestrian Centre accurate information about your riding, health, weight, and fitness and note that riders will be assessed in the arena before you leave the yard. Any misbehavior or anti-social behavior toward staff or animals cannot be tolerated. Children between the ages of eight and 12 should be accompanied on the guided trail ride by an adult.

If you are fit and not overweight, you will be safer, ride better and you and your horse will enjoy yourselves more. For heavier riders, Coolmine Equestrian Centre does have a strong Irish cob and Irish Sports Horses. Please discuss when making the booking.

  • Minimum age: 12 years
