Would you like to live the experience of the herds passing through the Cañada Real Leonesa Occidental? Surrounded by oaks and cork oaks, the route runs through Corchuela (Toledo) to Ramacastañas (Ávila) where the Cañada overlaps with the Roman Road of the Vía de la Plata, a route that is made in the months that coincide with the rise or fall of the cattle to summer and winter pastures. This route has a duration of three days, beginning in Navalmoral de la Mata and ending in Puerto del Pico in the Sierra de Gredos.
La Plata de Oropesa is an establishment that began its journey as a restaurant more than half a century ago, since 1965, serving the people who passed through Oropesa (Toledo). Hostal La Plata is an ideal place to stay and discover Oropesa, a Medieval villa that has numerous monuments, it's a colorful medieval castle next to the Renaissance palace, convents, churches, etc.
Hostal Avenida is a perfect accommodation for those who want to experience the natural and heritage wealth of Arenas de San Pedro. It is a simple hostel with only 18 spacious rooms, all fully equipped with a complete bathroom, heating/fan, wardrobe, television, and Wi-Fi.
The Dehesas Extremeñas Equestrian Center, in the town of Navalmoral de la Mata, is located on the edge of the Cañada Real Leonesa Occidental. This fact, together with the fact that Extremadura is the only place in the world where transhumance is still practiced, gives rise to this route.
You will be riding through it, among holm oaks and cork oaks of Campo Arañuelo, with a width of several hundred meters and abundant grasslands, passing through La Corchuela (Toledo) until crossing the Tiétar River in Ramacastañas, where the royal harbor was located. From here, the ravine overlaps the Roman road of Puerto del Pico, a section used by thousands of Avilanian cows that graze during the summer in the summits of Gredos.
You can meet on the road with impressive herds, usually of cows of the Avilanian race, enjoying the encounter with cowboys that still continue this ancient livestock tradition. The recommended dates coincide with the climb to the summer pastures (June-July) and the descent to the winter pastures (September-October).
After the arrival of clients, the first objective is to evaluate the level of knowledge of the riders in the equestrian center. After contact with riders, amazons, allocation of horses, and equipment, start a route to the town of La Corchuela (Toledo), running through a wide glen, between holm oaks and pastures.
You will see the impressive route for its scenic beauty, begin the ascent slightly to higher lands with a mountain landscape, with a height of 430 meters above sea level.
Today will be the route where you will begin the true ascent to the mountains. Go from a height of 430 meters to 1352 meters. In an eminently high mountain landscape with species of trees, the characteristic of the forest stands such as pine, chestnut, and oak rebollo. Ascending in sections by a Roman road, in the direction of the Sierra de Gredos, a hot spot of biodiversity in the Iberian context, reaching 50 to 64% of the terrestrial vertebrate species of the Iberian Peninsula. Arrive at the top of the port and end of the route.
