This horseback riding tour is a fast-paced ride that is ideal for intermediate to advanced riders. Riding the native Marwari breed of India, is a hot-blooded horse that excels at endurance.
These rides are fast-paced with long, speedy canters as the terrain are sandy tracks ideal for letting the horses pick up the pace. Whilst crossing villages or farmlands, the pace is trotting and walking.
You will be accommodated in Heritage Rajasthani accomodation and luxury tented camps with beds, linen, and a bathroom caravan.
Once the regal and divine cavalry horses of the mighty Rajput warriors, the Marwari is a hot-blooded breed, full of character, intelligence, and remarkably curled ears. Discover the joy of riding the indigenous Marwari horse of India through its sandy homeland of Rajasthan on this unique Marwar Festival Ride. The Marwar Festival spans two days and is filled with traditional dancing, singing, crafts and polo.
Arrive in Jodhpur airport, drive to Naguar (3 hours drive). Meet the horses at Nagaur Fort and go for an initial acclimatization ride within the enormous fort. Overnight at Nagaur Fort, a huge traditional Rajasthani fort that is full of elaborately painted murals, intricate Rajasthani interior design, and steeped in history.
At 9 am, mount the horses who are already ready and tacked up in the Dundlod Safari’s ‘Risala,’ meaning cavalry, tack colors. Ride out of this magnificent fort into the surrounding Thar Desert. Rajasthan offers excellent riding terrain, full of sandy stretches perfect for long fast canters. The Marwari breed is naturally forward-going and spirited. The canters are fast and thrilling!
You will stop in a shady spot for lunch and a 2-hour rest so the horses can eat, drink and rest before continuing the afternoon leg of the ride. Ride overnight to the evening's camp. The campsites are already set up, with the huge Dundlod Safari’s tents that accommodate two single beds with full linen and ample room to stand and move about.
There will be local Dussehra festivities happening, which celebrate the coming back of Lord Ram after 14 years of exile. Spend the evening having dinner and drinks around the campsite. Dinner is local Rajasthani food which is usually a delicious curry, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes on offer.
After a western breakfast of eggs, fruit, yogurt, juice, coffee, tea or local Indian chai, you set off on the ride. Today you ride across sandy trails towards the most beautiful accommodation of Khimsar Fort. The fort has been fully renovated and is a stunning and luxurious place to stay overnight.
Dinner at Khimsar Fort and drinks before heading to bed to be ready for another day spent in the saddle.
Heading off into the desert at 9 am for another spectacular day of riding the energetic Marwari horses across sand dunes, seeing local villages, and fast canters. After lunch and a rest, you ride to the overnight camp for chai, gin, tonics, and dinner around the campfire.
Setting off in the morning after a campsite breakfast, you ride through spectacular scenery and see glimpses into rural India that are far off the tourist trails. Tonight is another magical overnight camp filled with chats about the days ride, gin and tonics, and great food.
Up and ride across incredible sandy terrain to the most spectacular location, Reggie’s Camel Camp. The accommodation is a real oasis in the desert with a beautiful pool overlooking the Great Indian Desert below, a poolside bar, and exceptional Rajasthani hospitality.
A fun, speedy final ride around the desert outside of Reggie’s camp. Crossing sand dunes, local villages and getting some fast and thrilling final canters in. Overnight at Reggie’s camp for a second night, getting to enjoy the camp for a second evening is an amazing opportunity.
Guests can either travel home or on their onward journeys, or they can continue to the exceptional Marwar Festival in Jodphur (additional cost). This is a lively fair of Rajasthani music, arts and crafts, animals and polo. One day is enough to experience the fair.
Kr. Raghuvendra Singh Dundlod, known as 'Bonnie', leads all horse safaris conducted by the Royal Equestrian & Polo Centre. Bonnie has been guiding horse safaris in this region for over thirty years, when he established Dundlod Horse Safaris and Adventures in 1985. Bonnie is a passionate and expert horseman whose care for the horses really shines through. The founder of the Indigenous Horse Society of India, Bonnie has worked tirelessly to promote, conserve and establish breeding guidelines for the Marwari breed of horse. Bonnie is charismatic as a guide and full of wonderful stories to share.
Daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included in the price. Your delicious Western breakfast consists of eggs, yoghurt, fruit, toast, jam, and butter. Lunches and dinners are traditional Rajasthani dishes such as lentils, curries, and chapati bread. A range of vegetarian and non vegetarian food is offered.
