This small Balkan country is a hidden treasure, unspoiled by tourism. Imagine jagged peaks as spectacular as those of Switzerland and the rest of the Alps, canyons whose depth rivals that of Colorado, wild and untouched nature. It is in a mountain and high mountain landscape that you evolve to discover as your journey progresses, the charms of three national parks, each as different as the other.
The cavalry consists of about twenty Balkan mountain horses. They are perfectly adapted to the terrain. Use of Western saddles. Saddle bags are provided to carry some personal belongings and picnics for lunches.
This ride is for riders who are comfortable at all three gaits outdoors. The ride takes place partly in the mountains, the basic gait remains the walk. You ride on average five to six hours per day (20 to 30 kilometers per day), but some days can go up to eight hours in the saddle. There may be passages on foot.
The guides on this hike speak English. They will help you discover their country and their passion for their horses.
You will ride through three different mountains (two national parks) and many lakes. Eating traditional Montenegrian food, meeting local people, sleeping in katuns - summer villages.
Biogradska Gora National Park was proclaimed a national park in 1952. The most impressive part of the national park is the virgin forest reserve, a surface of 16 square kilometers, where a strict protection system has been established. That is one of the last virgin forests in Europe.
Hidden in Sinjajevina cliffs and surrounded by dense coniferous trees, there is a lake of emerald green color. Its biggest depth of 19 meters places this almost undiscovered jewel among the three deepest lakes in Montenegro. Its beauty and quality are preserved and confirmed by a strict regime of protection within the National Park “Durmitor.”
This breathtaking national park was formed by glaciers and is traversed by rivers and underground streams. Along the Tara River canyon, which has the deepest gorges in Europe, the dense pine forests are interspersed with clear lakes and harbor a wide range of endemic flora. It was inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1980.
Food and drink (non-alcoholic) are included in the package. Enjoy full board meals starting with dinner on the arrival date and finishing with breakfast on the departure date. Lunches will mostly be picnics taken from the saddlebags. During dinners, the emphasis is on local cuisine that Eco-Tours Montenegro will invite you to discover. The cooked products are often from organic farming.
