Unforgettable Horse Riding Tour in Spain

EcoSlow Experience invites you this horse riding holiday where you will experience an exciting circular itinerant trail, beautiful golden sand beaches, history, and delicious gastronomy. This route runs through two large natural areas, through the Baix Empordà and the Costa Brava, the Protected Natural Area of the Gavarres and the Natural Park of Montgrí, Medes Islands, and Down Ter River. The mountains and sea will accompany you from the Megalithic era to our times going through the Roman, Medieval and pirate lands. It will allow you to discover this area with all the adventure and dynamism of a traveling route and with all the comforts of spending two consecutive nights in each accommodation.

Els Masos d’en Coll

Els Masos d'en Coll is an agrotourism where you will live the authentic rural tourism EcoSlow. A haven of peace in the heart of the Empordá, on the Costa Brava, it is a place to disconnect from the routine and connect with nature. It is close to the fantastic beaches of the Mediterranean Sea, famous natural parks with a lot of biodiversities, beautiful medieval villages, museums and nature routes for walking or cycling.

There is an outdoor swimming pool, large outdoor areas, farm with animals, ecological orchard, playground for children, multipurpose rooms, library, tourist information, and gym, all free. There is free Wi-Fi everywhere.

Staying in Els Masos d'en Coll means living in the countryside. Your host lives on this farm cultivating the land for more than 6 generations.

Program

Day 1: Welcome

Arrival to Els Masos d'en Coll, rural and equestrian tourism center. Once you arrive at Els Masos d’en Coll, you will receive all the information about the routes, riding times, points of interest, accommodation, as well as other points that may have relevance for the good development of your holidays on horseback.

At night, dinner will be with all the other riders so that everyone has their first contact and you can start feeling like a team so you can enjoy the next 6 days with your friends: the horses.

Day 2: Route of the Pirates and the Fortified Masias

The moment has finally arrived, it’s time to make contact with your companion and become familiar with her or him. Then you continue with a quiet and calm route to the river Ter. Towards Montgrí, you will pass by fortified farmhouses and you will be able to see how they were able to defend its inhabitants when there were pirate attacks.

Then you will continue passing by the bottom of Montgrí till you get to the beach and then you will cross the river and make your way back. Returning to Els Masos d’en Coll, you will go through apple crops, fields that were in past times ponds and wetlands.

Day 3: The Medieval villages of Catalonia

Today, you are going to make your way to the mountains. As you are going to get closer to some medieval villages, you will go to Peratallada and you will contemplate what until the XVIII century was a lake and 2000 years before it was the sea. In Peratallada, Canapost, Castell d'Empordà, Monells, Cruïlles, you will see stone constructions from the Medieval period.

After you arrive at the Mas Masaller accommodation where after setting up the horses, you can rest in a quiet environment. In the evening, you can savor some traditional dishes prepared by Joan and Marta.

Day 4: The “romantic” Mirador of Costa Brava

Today, you will be going on a route that takes you through cork oaks and chestnut trees, passing through St Cebriá de Lladó, “Els Metges” of Romanesque times, unbeatable views from the Pyrenees to the Costa Brava. Next, you find the first megalithic vestige, a dolmen in a strategic viewpoint of “Puig d'Arques”, and descend heading to your accommodation for today. You will go through narrow paths and then you will find the hermitage of Sta. Llucia d’Arboç, another example of Romanesque construction in the area. Once you arrive, you will go to rest because the trail for tomorrow is a long one.

Day 5: Through the dolmens, arrive at the sea

After a good breakfast, you will head to the beach. On the way, you will be able to see old ice wells, abundant in the vicinity; the Dolmen "Tres Peus" one of the most well preserved megalithic monuments of the area and then you will enjoy the wide views over the whole plain with the blue Mediterranean to a companion you.

You head along to the beach, but before that, you will stop at some monuments such as the church of Sta. Coloma de Fitor, from the X century. Going through forests and Roman trails, surrounding the medieval village of Pals, where you will be accommodated tonight. It is only a few meters from the beach. Once you have the horses in their area and they have been fed, you can have a nice rest in the cozy accommodation or go for a walk to the fine sand beach, Pals beach.

Day 6: In the heart of the Costa

Today, you are in the Costa Brava. You are going to make a circular route passing through old mines and paths with holm oaks, cork oaks and pines, going to a high point where you can contemplate this beautiful landscape. Queremany, the viewpoint of Pals has splendid views of the beach of Pals, where some historians say that you were able to see the departure of Christopher Columbus's ships on his first trip to America. With this beautiful scenery, you will continue your way to the beach where you will go and rest because tomorrow you have to get up very early.

Day 7: Between the Ter River, the sea, and rice fields

Today, you depart very early and there is the possibility of riding on the beach. You follow the entire beach to the mouth of the Ter river and you abandon the sea passing through apple trees and rice crops, cultivation fields, where depending on the time of year, you can enjoy magnificent rice fields, the famous rice of Pals. A good rice casserole to close these magnificent 6 days of route awaits you, come on.

Note: Depending on the time of the year, the horses will not be able to enter the beach, but you can always enjoy ocean views on your horse, and on foot, you can reach the beach.

Day 8: Goodbye friends, see you again

With the memory of having shared some magnificent days, knowing prehistory, history, gastronomy, etc., you will be able to return to your places of origin, not if before receiving a souvenir that reminds you that the Costa Brava on horseback is a pleasure.

Els Masos d’en Coll is located in a privileged place, in the countryside, surrounded by fields. Wake up with the song of the birds, stroll along the roads and forests, see how the fields are full of life, how the farmers work the land, listen and feel the silence of the Empordà.

Situated in an unbeatable place, it is set at the foot of the Natural Park of Montgrí, Bajo Ter and the Medes Islands, in the Golden triangle of L’Empordà, with its medieval villages and the incredible coves and beaches, between the sea and mountains.

Food

Breakfast, lunch during the trail, and dinner in the accommodation are included in the price. You will be served with complete and delicious menus with recipes of traditional dishes with drinks including water, a glass of wine or beer, and coffee. Vegetarian and vegan meals are available on request.

There are three types of lunches that are combined to the needs of the trails:

  • Cowboy type picnic (in the saddlebags)
  • Sitting picnic: The team will wait for you with everything prepared in a special point of the trail
  • Local restaurants

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Arrival by airplane

A free transfer will be arranged from and to Girona Airport (GRO) or Girona Train Station, in a single transfer for all customers:

  • Arrival: Pick-up at 7:30 p.m. Please book your flights to Girona with a landing time no later than 17:30.
  • Departure: Leave from accommodation at 9:30 a.m. Please book your flights from Girona not earlier than 12:00.
  • The Girona-Accommodation journey is one hour

Arrival by bus or train

There is a connection to Girona by bus or train from Barcelona. The train company is Renfe and the bus company is Segales.

Arrival by shuttle
