This tour is loved by most guests because of the excellent riding route through Transylvanian villages, forests, and hills (Kiskede-Szencsed-Székelyvarság and back) and also maybe because it is not that exhausting. It’s just a wonderful possibility for riding, relaxing, and slackening your pace.
This offer includes 3 days of riding and comes with four nights of accommodation and full board. Round tour. Arrival the night before.
The ride starts in Kiskede, a small and hidden Transylvanian village then you ride through villages, forest tracks, and huge meadows. On the first day of riding, you end up in Szencsed, a place near Hargita mountain, where only two inhabitants live at the moment. The next day is a round trip to Székelyvarság, and the third day you return to the base in Kiskede.
The riding
During this vacation, you will ride EquiTransylvania's well-trained, sturdy, and forward-going Hungarian purebred sport horses (Shagya-Arabs, Gidrans, Kisberi, and Lippizans). The horses have lots of staying power and are used to different types of terrain.
The horses are ridden in English tack. EquiTransylvania has custom-made saddles, fitted individually for each horse, produced by a saddler manufacturer.
Three days of riding, 4 to 5 hours a day in the saddle is common for this vacation. The riding is a mix of paces to suit the actual terrain condition and is fast in places. This vacation is only suitable for good intermediate to experienced riders who are confident in all paces. You must be able to handle a horse at speed in a group situation and be comfortable riding over rough terrain. Some natural obstacles also need to be negotiated. You also need to be healthy and physically fit.
Since the Hungarian horses are smaller than the average warmblood, the weight limit is 90 kg. For security reasons, EquiTransylvania recommends wearing hard helmets.
The horses
Over the past few years, EquiTransylvania has been selecting the most suitable horses for the local climate and specific terrain conditions.
Deciding was the personality and the character of each of them, but as the fundamental principle, EquiTransylvania likes Hungarian-origin purebreds. These traditionally bred horses have proved their endurance, intelligence, and excellence over the centuries.
All horses are trained for equestrian tours and they are used to the Transylvanian terrain conditions. EquiTransylvania trains them on a regular basis in the arena, works with lunge or long lines, and also works in hand. They are healthy, strong, and fit for all trail rides. For EquiTransylvania, the horses must live as close to their natural habitat as possible. If you want to know more, please ask EquiTransylvania for their Animal welfare policy.
Itinerary
Please note that the following itinerary is the baseline. Weather conditions, unpredictable natural or other obstacles can change the route. Also, the order of villages you visit might vary. Usually, you spend 4-5 hours on horseback, with a midday break and picnic lunch, riding around 30 km a day.
The tour will have the distances and riding times measured and scheduled. Based on the rider's abilities, for your safety and comfort, the guide can decide to shorten or alter the initial route.
Day 1
After arriving at EquiTransylvania's partner guesthouse, you get to know each other and have dinner. A short briefing also takes place.
Day 2
The next three days are about a round tour. After breakfast and all preparations are done, you head to your first destination: Szencsed, a hidden place, close to the Hargita Mountain, where only a few people live. You ride through small nice Transylvanian villages, huge meadows, and nice forest tracks.
The ride is a mix of walk, trot, and occasionally canters. During the day, you spend approximately 5 hours total in the saddle, riding around 30 km in total. Picnic lunch at midday.
The guests will prepare their luggage in the morning which will be transferred with a service car to the evening destination. In the saddle bag, you store only the absolutely necessary items like a bottle of water for everyone, a first-aid kit, etc. Lunch is also transported by car to the picnic place.
You arrive at the destination late afternoon. Your host will be waiting for you with a great lunch, accommodation in a yurt with beds, a lake, a shower, a sauna, and lots of kind animals.
Day 3
This day is about exploring the natural and wild Transylvania. After a night spent in the yurt and a great breakfast, the horses will be tacked up and you leave the farm. You will return here by late afternoon. Depending on how tired the riders are from the previous day, for this day, you have two options:
a. One longer, all-day long tour, heading to Székelyvarság. Leaving the accommodation, you ride on forest roads, among pine forests and mountains. In the afternoon, you reach the lookout point of Székelyvarság, from where you can see the whole of Szeklerland. You will have your lunch here, and then you will continue the ride to a small waterfall. A short stop can be made at the Parliament of Varság.
You will return to Szencsed with a small round, where a heated sauna and a hot dinner are waiting. Swimming in the lake is also possible.
You spend about five hours in the saddle, and on this day, due to the terrain, you go mostly stepping and sometimes trotting.
b. A shorter round tour to the peat bog at Fenyőkút, an extraordinary place that has been declared a Special Nature Conservation Area within the Natura2000 habitat network. A great place to relax and admire nature. The bog is a great place to visit.
On this tour, you spend approximately 3 hours in the saddle. You have a long picnic lunch at the bog, and there are also possibilities to relax and have a walk in nature. When you return to the farm at Szencsed, a heated sauna, and a hot dinner are waiting. Swimming in the lake is also possible.
Day 4
On your last day of riding, you ride nearly 40 km, much more dynamically than the previous day, with a lot of trotting and galloping. Starting from Szencsed, riding on a huge plateau, you reach the Lookout for the Heart of Jesus, where you spend your first rest. Then, riding on, you touch Farkaslaka, where you may also visit the memorial house of Áron Tamási.
You have lunch at the edge of a forest, then you return to Kiskede by riding through forests and hills. In the evening, you end the tour with dinner, a little brandy, and some wine.
Day 5
After breakfast, you say goodbye. EquiTransylvania takes guests to the airport or a bus is organized for the airport transfer if that is requested.
