Accommodation will be in shared rooms of four or 5 persons per room with shared bathroom and toilet. Private room is also possible for an extra fee.

According to the actual itinerary, you might spend one night out, in another guesthouse. For this night, your small luggage will be transported by car. The next morning, it will be also taken back to the base.

During this vacation, you’ll stay in the same guesthouse, except for one possible night out in another guesthouse. You will ride through huge meadows, and forest tracks, the endless hills and beautiful landscape of Transylvania which is best to be explored from the saddle.

The riding

During this vacation, you will ride EquiTransylvania’s well-trained, fit and forward going Hungarian purebred sport horses (Shagya-Arabs, Gidrans, Kisberi half bred, and Lippizainers). The horses are trained and used to the varied terrain condition.

The horses are ridden in English tack. EquiTransylvania have custom-made saddles, fitting individually for each horse, produced by a saddler manufacture. Five days of riding, four to six hours a day in saddle is usual for this vacation. On day five, you’ll let the horses rest and an excursion is organized for you.

Riding level

The riding is a mix of paces to suit the actual terrain condition and is fast in places. This ride is only suitable for good intermediate to experienced riders who are confident in all paces.

You must be confident handling a horse at speed in a group situation and comfortable riding over varied terrain. Some natural obstacles also need to be negotiated. You also need to be healthy and physically fit. For security reason, EquiTransylvania recommend wearing hard helmets.

Activities / events

In addition to the horse riding, you will meet the local people, explore the Transylvanian dances and part of local culture. Also, some traditional hand craftsman will be visited.

After returning from riding trails, you will have the chance to ride mountain bikes, or hiking the hills in region.

On the rest day for horses, you’ll experience the history of Transylvania, a visit to medieval town of Sighisoara, a part of UNESCO cultural heritage.

Please note that the following itinerary is EquiTransylvania base line, depending on weather conditions, unpredictable natural or built obstacles can change the route. Also, the order of locations you visit might change.

EquiTransylvania have the distances and riding times measured and scheduled. Based on the riders’ abilities, for your best interest, the guide can decide for shortening the initial trail or change the route.

Day 1: Arrival day

Arrive at Cluj Napoca Airport (CLJ) where you will be collected mid-afternoon. Transfer to EquiTransylvania riding base / partner guesthouse is a journey of about four hours.

After arriving at partner guesthouse, you get to know each other, have a dinner, and a short briefing also takes place.

Day 2: Forest rest place near the village of Székelyszentmihály (Mihaileni)

Today is your first day of riding. After tasty breakfast, you are transferred to EquiTransylvania horse riding base, where tacked up horses are awaiting. Every rider gets the best suitable horse for the following two days. You’ll spend some time here, usually, a short ride in arena is also needed.

After preparations, you’ll head to your first destination: a nice forest rest place near the village of Székelyszentmihály (Mihaileni). You ride through Transylvanian villages, meadows and cart routes, and also forest road.

The hills offer a fantastic view over the local area, the feeling of freedom and clean air is your fellow traveler. You’ll often see rabbits running over the pastures, foxes escape from the riders noise, and groups of deer are watching you on your way.

The ride is a mix of walk, trot, and occasionally canters. During the day, you’ll spend approximately four to four and a half hours total in saddle, riding around in total 30 kilometers. Cold picnic at lunchtime will be from local food, served at the rest place - delivered by service car.

Day 3: Kiskede - Nagykede - Kissolymos - Kiskede

The second day of riding might be a bit shorter than the first one: depends on the group of guests. You ride towards Kissolymos, another small village at the border of the regional county. After leaving the base in Kiskede, you’ll ride through Nagykede.

You will cross several hills and a small portion of road and you’ll find yourselves in a beautiful portion of nature. It’s a valley where you see the agricultural fields on the right side, on the left, meadows and in front, a nice portion of forest.

This is where your trail leads to. This is a great option for a longer canter up the hill until you reach the forest. You will ride on nice trails through the forest, followed by some meadows and you reach Kissolymos, with a horse riding center at margin: your rest place for lunch.

After lunch, you ride back to Kiskede. The trail leads through several meadows and horse cart routes. Also a fishing lake is in your vision. On the way home, you have great chances for several trots and canters.

During the day, you’ll spend four to five hours in the saddle, riding around 28 kilometers in total. Cold picnic at lunchtime from local food is served at the rest place.

Day 4: Ride to Farkaslaka (Lupeni)

It is the day three of riding and a great chance for long trots and canters. This day, you’ll visit a 22-meter high Heart of Jesus statue located in the outskirts of Farkaslaka (Lupeni), on the 953 meters (3125 feet) high Gordon Hill. Actually, this is the tallest Jesus statue from Eastern Europe.

The route leads through meadows and cart routes, so you have plenty of chances for higher paces. Lunch will be served at the rest place, afterward, you’ll return to the base camp. Riding is about five to six hours, with one to two hours of resting at the statue.

Day 5: Trip to Sighisoara

This is a rest day for horses. It is a great opportunity for you to visit Sighisoara, a fine example of a small, fortified medieval town, part of UNESCO World Heritage site. Sighisoara (Schäßburg - Schassburg or Schäsbrich in German) still stands as one of the most beautiful and best-preserved medieval towns in Europe.

Designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this perfectly intact 16th century gem with nine towers, cobbled streets, burgher houses and ornate churches rivals the historic streets of Old Prague or Vienna for atmospheric magic.

It is also the birthplace of Vlad Dracula also known as Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler), ruler of the province of Walachia from 1456 to 1462. It was he who inspired Bram Stoker’s fictional creation, Count Dracula.

You’ll spend some hours in the city. You’ll enjoy a traditional Transylvanian lunch. You’ll then return to the guesthouse by evening.

Day 6: Kiskede - Firtosváralja

With everyone rested, this day is just great for a longer ride. You’ll spend the whole day in saddle and plan to reach Firtosváralja by evening to spend the night there in a nice, traditionally built guesthouse.

Through your way, you’ll cross several villages in which you’ll spend some time in some of them. Locally produced food and drinks will be tasted, traditional craftsman and some monuments will also be visited.

The view is extraordinary: the Transylvanian landscape and the endless hills. You will not see cars, hear no noise of traffic or city. Instead, you might see: deer and rabbits, also maybe foxes. Also, you’ll meet sheep herds and cow flocks- part of the local traditional agriculture. For the evening, locally produced dinner and some folk program is awaiting you.

Day 7: Firtosváralja - Kiskede

This is the last day of the week you spend with riding. You’ll return to the horse riding base in Kiskede, on different trails from the ones you traveled the day before.

After arriving in the late afternoon, you’ll say goodbye to horses and thank them for the work during the week. In the evening, you’ll have a “goodbye” festivity dinner where you can share all your little adventures and many a good story will be told.
