Exmoor Riding is a delightful homely farmhouse bed and breakfast in Exmoor, a 15th-century national trust farmhouse, within Holnicote Estate, Exmoor National Park, Porlock Vale.

Exmoor Riding, situated within Exmoor National Park, steeped in history, is a house that tells its own story. Exmoor Riding is in a conservation area, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and a National Trust property within the Exmoor National Park. If you are looking for a peaceful break, in an old farmhouse, eco-friendly, with activities and local natural history, then you will love staying there.

The bedrooms 1 - Foxes Den

This room is the 'best room' with character and comfort in mind, with separate private shower room. The double / triple (double bed and single bed) bedroom overlooks the garden and hills beyond, while the shower room has an amazing view over the yard with the stables and horses. Quiet, peaceful and relaxing, this room can also be let with an additional small bed or travel cot.

The bedrooms 2 - Badgers Sett

A delightful double room with beautiful views overlooking the garden, woods, and hills opposite. There is a shared shower room along the corridor with basin and separate shower. Tea and coffee making facilities are available in-room with TV.

This room is also available with a triple room downstairs Otters Holt for additional family members sharing the same facilities.

The bedrooms 3 - Otters Holt

This is the largest room downstairs running from front to back of the house with plenty of space for the whole family. This room has two single beds and one double bed for larger families. Otters Holt can be let on its own, with use of the upstairs shower room or let with Badgers Sett.

The farmhouse was probably originally the Manor of Bossington, and has many fascinating historical features, including the open-hall house design of the medieval period. Built around 1456, roughly at the same time as the Chapel of Ease on the same ground, with reclamation and restoration through every century since, the house shows a great deal of charm and character.

Program

Exmoor Riding is based at West Lynch Farm, a stunningly beautiful medieval farm at the heart of the 12,500 acre National Trust Holnicote Estate, within the Exmoor National Park, surrounded by 400 miles of bridleways over several stunning hills. It is ideal for riding and walking, and they want to share this amazing area with you.

The following itinerary is a guide for your 5-night, 5-day riding holiday with Exmoor Riding, situated between the small hamlets of Allerford and Bossington. However, the program, length of stay, and selection of activities can be altered to best suit yourselves and could also include one of Bird of Prey activities, or visit the Afternoon Flying Display. Have an enjoyable and great well-earned break with Exmoor Riding.

For walkers, bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts, there are also numerous local walks along the coast and inland over National Trust Holnicote Estate, Dunkery Beacon, the ancient oak woods of Horner, the bird paradise of Porlock Marsh, and beautiful walks along the South West Coast Path. If you wish to change the itinerary activity or lengthen or shorten your time, please let Exmoor Riding know at the time of booking so they can best accommodate you and your preferred choices.

This six-day stay/five-day riding holiday is challenging and is not for the weak hearted! All riders do need to be riding fit, (as do the horses!), and be confident and competent at walk, trot, risen canter, and gallop. The rides are not fast but pass through some amazing countryside, beautiful views, lovely moorland open spaces, and offer some gentle open canters across the moors.

Day 1: Arrival

Arrive at your leaisure. Most guests arrive around 4:00 pm, but if you wish to arrive earlier just let Exmoor Riding know and they will ensure they are here for you. They will show you to your room and you can explore the horse yards and local area to unwind after your long journey.

For your evening meal, you can walk or drive to the nearby village of Porlock for a selection of eating places, or purchase some delicacies in local food stores to bring back to the garden or your room to eat!

Day 2: Webbers Post

Wake up to a full English breakfast, of cereal, yoghurt, toast and fruit to start your day ready for the morning ride of two and a half hours over Webbers Post through rivers, tracks, woods, and moor. Webbers Post offers a beautiful habitat with rushing rivers to cross, long cantering tracks, and amazing views from this famous viewpoint. It will be approximately 10 miles of riding.

During the afternoon, a Gentle Horse and Rider Workshop is offered to include close-contact in-hand work, horse agility, join up, de-sensitisation work, lungeing, loose schooling, core breathing control and grounding, and liberty work in a purpose-built wood chip arena and liberty paddock.

Day 3: Exmoor hills

Wake up to a full English breakfast to start your day ready for your first full day ride. If you wish, you can help bring the horses in from the fields before riding out over surrounding Exmoor hills with amazing views of South Wales, Porlock Vale and Dunkery Beacon, mainly moorland riding. It will be approximately 10-12 miles riding.

A light picnic lunch will be carried with a drink of your choice, and/or an afternoon ice-cream stop prior to arriving back at the stables. The horses will be fed and then you can help take them out to the fields for their well-deserved night-time grazing rest.

Day 4: North Hill

Another beautiful morning breakfast, and a half-day ride usually over North Hill, with coastal and moorland views north to Wales, or south to Dartmoor! Return home to a light lunch and either have the afternoon to yourself or stay and enjoy the regular Flying Display with owls and other birds of prey.

Day 5: Trail ride

Your second full day ride over the local hills and moors, exploring more of the amazing countryside around the farm. Generally, full-day rides are trail rides, largely at walk and trot but with some gentle canters. The terrain is challenging for both horse and rider and all participants do need to be riding fit and experienced.

Day 6: Key Hill

Your final half-day ride after breakfast and bringing the horses in from the fields, grooming, feeding and tacking up prior to riding. This ride will be very different from the others, and usually over Ley Hill, one of the higher hills in the surrounding countryside. Each day the rides will be a difference.

Horses

Exmoor Riding has seven beautiful horses at the stables, to suit all riders of any ability. All of the horses are used to riding barefoot over the stony terrain and are comfortable on all surfaces. some horses can be ridden bitless, and others are in treeless saddles, as approriate for the confomration of the horse and his personality. Exmoor Riding considers this to be a gentle and natural approach to riding, and they all respond well to gentle instruction and kind horsemanship.

The horses are quality happy horses, and are fit and forward going with competent riders, not suitable for novice riders. They have all spent their entire riding lives with Exmoor Riding and are used to the tough terrain and steep hills. Riders must be able to control a horse in walk, rising trot, and canter. Below are the names of the horses:

Exmoor Riding's horses available for riding are:

  • Juta
  • Archie
  • Theo
  • Papoose
  • Danny
  • Tom
  • Ryan
  • Exmoor Riding also has other horses at the farm on rehabilitation, training and retirement.
