Complex for Wine and Spa tourism "Starosel" is located on the outskirts of the village of Starosel and offers outdoor and indoor swimming pools with hot mineral water as well as a spa center and restaurant with excellent cuisine. The rooms are an excellent combination of the traditional Bulgarian style interior and modern comfort. The hotel's interiors are filled with natural materials and hand-made furniture and fabrics that represent the magic of Bulgarian folklore. The combination of warm colors with the natural curves of the tree offers guests an unforgettable experience.
Hotel "Starosel" offers 22 accommodations places including two suites with a fireplace, five studios, and 15 double rooms. For your comfort, each room has an LCD TV, cable TV, internet access, phone, minibar, individually controlled air conditioner, alarm buttons in the bathroom, and hairdryer.
Program
From the height of the horseback, Edzul will show you the stunning beauty of nature in the Thracian Kingdom such as rivers, dams, forests, fields, meadows, vineyards, orchards, unusually shaped rocks, tumuli, and mountains. You will also have the opportunity to get familiar with the everyday life and the traditions of the hospitable locals who will welcome you not only with their unique open-mindedness but also with their delicious, locally produced bio-food.
Edzul invites you to enjoy this area and all its beauty from the saddle. They have very well-trained, calm, and strong horses (breed Shagia, Arab, and mixed Arab) that are perfect for every type of rider. The saddle types that are offered are English saddle, Western saddle, and endurance saddle.
Daily itinerary
Day 1
- Length of riding: 4 - 5 hours
You will leave from Edzul's horse stable in the town of Hisarya to Starosel Wine Complex, known as the largest spa center in the Balkans. The crossing is 20 kilometers at the foot of Sredna Gora, an area known as the Thracian Valley, and gives you the opportunity to enjoy dams, gardens and rose fields. A picnic is organized for lunch. You will ride through forests, fields, and meadows and cross the small village of Matenitsa. Before going to Starosel, you will visit the ancient Thracian temple of Starosel. You will be spending the night at the Starosel Winery (a three-star accommodation) where you can taste different types of wines and enjoy the mineral water in the spa zone.
Day 2
Length of riding: 4 - 5 hours
You will start with a visit to the Thracian cult complex Starosel from the 5th century BC (by jeep). The route is 20-25 kilometers from the Starosel Wine Complex to Ezdul Equestrian Base. Riding will reveal wonderful areas in the heart of Sredna Gora. Lunch is a picnic.
Horses
The horses excel not only in their unmatched natural beauty but also in their calmness and freedom to express their natural individuality and temperament in a harmonious and human environment. Your relationship with them follows the principles of the natural relationship between a man and a horse (natural horsemanship), involving a great deal of patience, profound understanding, harmonious contact, and disdaining violence against animals. The majority of Edzul horses are of the breeds of Arabian horses and Shagya Arabian horses with a proven and exceptional pedigree.
Edzul also has a few semi-probred horses with predominantly Arabian blood. All the riding horses have been systematically and extensively trained by Pat Parelli and Monty Roberts’s systems which have also been given tremendous affection, joy, and patience. You as human beings are love to people, nature, horses, and every living creature. Love stems from you since the moment of your birth and thanks to the horses you are not only able to keep it, but also to constantly increase it.
Edzul considers every client as a loving guest and a friend. Edzul adores working with children. It is a well-known fact that children’s work contact with animals contributes to their realizing and forming an attitude toward nature and taking care of the living world. In a purely physical aspect, horse-riding is good for the body as it helps to develop a straight posture as well as for the spine and all the muscles of the human body.

Lazar is the owner of Ezdul horse base, long-time riding instructor, former Endurance competitor and has 16 years of experience in equestrian tourism.
Location
Sredna Gora Region is an average-height mountain located in the center of Bulgaria that provides excellent conditions for riding. The climate is mild and gives suitable conditions for riding in all seasons including winter. The tour allows you to enjoy a mixture of historic, archaeological sites that are remains of the Thracian culture dating back to the 5th to the 4th century before Christ. Edzul's stable is located in the town of Hissarya, a famous spa resort in the center of Bulgaria.
With its 22 mineral springs and exceptionally mild climate, the area has been inhabited since 5000 years Before Christ. The Roman Baths that relocated to the beautiful parks in the old town are one of the few preserved on the Balkan Peninsula. You can enjoy also the ruins of the Roman city Dioklitsianopolis and its fortress there. Edzul invites you to enjoy this area and all its beauty from the saddle.
Starosel
The complex wine tourism "Starosel" is situated at the foot of the hill near the historic village of Starosel, where in 2000 the largest Thracian cult center. Starosel Village is located in the central part of the municipality of Hisar, on the southern slopes of the Central forest. The average altitude of the area is 300 meters n.m.r. The terrain of the region is formed by the soft slopes of the Central forest, which gradually turns to the south in the Upper Valley. The highest peaks of the mountains are about Starosel Aleksitsa (1530 meters) and lanterns (1450 meters).
The Starosel Winery
The Starosel winery is located on the outskirts of the village of Starosel and offers an outdoor and indoor swimming pool with hot mineral water as well as a spa center and restaurant with excellent cuisine. The rooms are an excellent combination of Traditional Bulgarian style interior and modern comfort.
Hisarya
Hisarya is a town that has been popular through its spa and wellness center since ancient times. It is located in the most northern part of the Thracian Valley in the south-eastern foot of Sredna Gora Mountain range which keeps it from the cold northern winds. This is why the town is blessed with its microclimate and is very pleasant. Hisarya has 22 springs which are located in a small area, each with different physical-chemical characteristics and temperature and with proven healing effects. When it is sunny, a must-see place is the Thracian temples in Starosel.
At the beginning of March, the streets of the town are decorated with the parade of the kukeri (people wearing traditional masks) called by the locals ‘dzhoumali’. They are different from the kukeri in any other part of Bulgaria and as such wear their unique masks. In case they venture to pull your hair, please don’t pull away. This is a part of a ritual that brings health and luck. Once the winter is over, the town of Hisarya will enchant you with the most mesmerizing parks you have ever seen.
There are acacias, linden trees, lilac trees, and black and white pine trees. There are also Canadian beech and Picea pungens, magnolias, the exotic ginkgo biloba trees, paulownia, albizia, rhus, and Acer palmatum. In Hisarya, there are four types of linden trees with different blooming periods, responsible for the pleasant scent around the town for more than 30 days. The most impressive historical sites in Hisarya are as follows:
- The fortified walls, the best preserved in Europe fortified wall from the late Antiquity (fourth century Anno Domini). Nowadays, it reaches a height of 11 metres with its tallest gate perched at 13 meters
- The ancient amphitheater located in the Momina Salza Park is a perfectly preserved semi-circular arena, a stage for shows, fights, and games during Antiquity
- The basilicas
- The Roman tomb
