About the tour
Gaucho Argentino creates small group expeditions throughout the year to offer you a unique experience - a personal encounter with the colors and culture of this region. Venturing into the Esteros del Iberá is diving into a profound horizon, where grasslands and reeds create a landscape that seems to stretch to infinity. This unique journey, which takes place at Portal Carambola in Concepción, Corrientes, guides you through one of the richest and most diverse ecosystems in the world, where nature is displayed in its fullest expression.
For three nights and four days, the Iberá journey invites you to explore these lands on horseback, crossing marshy areas and navigating lagoons and estuaries by canoe, following routes traversed by generations. This trip is a deep immersion into Guarani culture and tradition, where every step aims to preserve customs and respect ancestral practices. The authenticity of this experience lies in its connection with the environment and history, allowing you to understand and appreciate the wisdom of those who have lived in harmony with nature for centuries.
But the Esteros del Iberá is not just a destination of unparalleled natural beauty; it is also an example of conservation and sustainability. This journey is part of the conceptual path of the Rewilding Foundation, a collaboration aimed at protecting and preserving the natural wealth of one of the largest aquifers and reserves of fauna and flora in the world. Through this partnership, the goal is not only to enjoy the environment but also to contribute to its preservation, ensuring that future generations can experience the same natural wonder.
The Iberá journey is not a conventional tourist route; it is an opportunity to connect with the most authentic aspects of the Corrientes landscape. Here, nature is not just observed but lived, breathed, and felt in every corner. This trip allows you to disconnect from routine and reconnect with the essentials, in an environment where time seems to stand still and life flows with a serenity that only the Esteros del Iberá can offer. For those seeking an authentic experience that combines nature, culture, and conservation, the Esteros del Iberá represents an unparalleled destination.
Here, the beauty of the environment intertwines with Guarani cultural richness and a commitment to preservation, creating a journey that transcends the ordinary and takes you to the heart of what it means to be in harmony with nature. The night before you will have the opportunity to join them in a traditional and authentic peña in Salta. There you will enjoy the folkloric music of the region. The adventure begins when they meet you in Salta, early in the morning of your first day. Then they take you to the hills behind the small town of La Viña, south of Salta, to meet the horses and saddle them up.
You leave early on the first day to introduce you to the sights and sounds of a lush river valley. You stay in small gaucho houses before crossing the high mountain pass the next day so high you will feel like you can touch the sky (3470 meters). With spectacular views, sometimes above the clouds, this is a trip you will not forget. The next two nights are spent with a family in Amblayo, a small, remote village in a valley surrounded by majestic beauty. You will learn about the rural life and culture of this village and take a horseback excursion along the river and the wind-formed red stone field.
After riding along rivers and pampas through cactus forests, your last night is spent in a rustic and very old gaucho’s house. You do not need to be an experienced rider as Gaucho Argentino has different horses and they select them based on your experience. For inexperienced riders or children (minimum seven years old), they also have very good horses. They provide saddlebags for you to put your personal belongings for the ride.
Horses
The horses used for this journey are Peruvian Paso crosses, with a unique and smooth gait. Well-trained and steady, they know the high mountain passes as well as the gauchos who live here. Your job while on your horse is to admire the breathtaking scenery of both the red-striped mountains and the fascinating cactus forests of the valley. You will not pass the 4200 meters high in your ride.
