Words cannot explain the beauty of Salta. High in the Sierras, more than 3,000 meters above sea level, there exists a rich valley surrounded by colorful mountain ranges and crisscrossed by rivers and history. Join Gaucho Argentino for this amazing adventure in the mountains and valleys nestled between Salta, Cafayate, and Cachi. Gaucho Argentino offers small group expeditions year-round to provide you with a unique experience - a personal encounter with the colors and cultures of this region. Your job while on your horse is to admire the breathtaking scenery of both the red-striped mountains and the fascinating cactus forests of the valley.
Gaucho Argentino works with the hotel in Seclantaz, a small town famous for its ponchos. During the horse riding, you will also be provided with tents. You will stay in small gaucho homes. The next two evenings will be spent with your host family in Amblayo.
Gaucho Argentino will meet you in Salta, early in the morning of the first day. Gaucho Argentino then will transport you to the hills behind the small town of La Viña, south of Salta to meet the horses and saddle up.
You will start early on your first day to introduce you to the sights and sounds of a lush river valley. You will stay in small gaucho homes on this excursion and the first home will act as a cozy respite before crossing the high mountain pass the following day - so high, you’ll feel that you can touch the sky. Offering spectacular views, at times above the clouds, this will be a journey you won’t forget.
The next two evenings will be spent with your host family in Amblayo, a tiny and remote village in a valley surrounded by majestic beauty. You will learn about remote rural life and culture in this village and take a day trip on horseback along the river and through the windswept, red stone countryside. After a ride along pampas-rimmed rivers and through cactus forests, your final night will be spent in an old gaucho home, rustic, and remote.
Upon your return to civilization in Salta late on the fifth day, you will have an opportunity to join Gaucho Argentino at a traditional and authentic peña in Salta to toast the adventure and enjoy the folklore music of the region.
The horses used for this journey are Peruvian Paso crosses with a unique and smooth gate. Well-trained and steady, they know the high-mountain passes as well as the gauchos who live here.
Argentina, a country of beauty and drama, is renowned for its delicious beef, rich wines, tango, and its folk hero - the gaucho. Originally a nomadic horseman and cowhand of the Argentine Pampas, hundreds of years of history, legends, and ballads have helped define the cultural traditions of gauchos imbedding their influence deeply into Argentine cultural tradition. Because the gaucho played a major role in the county’s independence from Spain, he is respected as a symbol representing the nationalist feelings of Argentina. Gauchos were and remain proud and skilled horsemen. Typically, a gaucho's horse constituted most of what he owned in the world. Annual fiestas across Argentina usually include demonstrations of Gaucho horsemanship.
Please book your flight to arrive at Martín Miguel de Güemes International Airport (SLA). Transfer from and to this airport is available upon request.
Gaucho Argentino recommends that you fly to Salta from Buenos Aires and they have a travel agent that can help you with arrangements.
