With magnificent views overlooking the vast plains and distant mountains of the Skagafjörður valley, Hesta Sport's seven charming timber cottages are the ideal place to spend your days off all year round. Experience the serenity of northern Iceland and fill your days with the endless possibilities for adventure that Skagafjörður has to offer.

The cottages are nestled together up on the hill only a short walking distance from the center of Varmahlíð. In town, you will find all the services you need including tourist information, grocery shop, restaurant, petrol station, bank, hotel, swimming pool, and more. They have different styles of cottages, each with:

  • Unlimited access to the natural hot tub
  • Full self-catering kitchen and dining facilities
  • Bathroom and shower
  • Bed linen, towels, and bathrobes
  • Furnished living area
  • Free Wi-Fi

From the hot tub at the center of the well-maintained cottage site, you can enjoy the golden light of the midnight sun or watch the northern lights. The cottages range in size from studio-style bungalows (two to four people) to spacious multi-room retreats.

On the first day, Hestasport will meet you around noon in Varmahlíð, Skagafjörður at the bus station or you will meet them (if you travel by car) in their office in Varmahlíð. You will move into your private cottage for the next days and settle in. In the afternoon, you will meet your companions for the next days, the horses. Your guide will show you how to saddle and then it‘s time to get on horseback for the first time. During this one-hour introductory trip, you will get first impressions of the Icelandic horse and the way it moves.

On the next days, Hestasport will adjust the trips to suit your abilities and skills and you will learn more about these fantastic horses. Usually, they plan for the second day a three-hour ride. As there is a lot to do in the area, they are happy to assist you in planning and booking any other activities for the other half of the day.

The next two riding days are planned as day tours on horseback with hand-horses. If you don't feel comfortable leading a hand-horse, they will assist you with that or find other possibilities; you can, for example, split a day tour into two shorter tours in the morning and afternoon. After saddling your horses and packing your lunch into saddlebags, it´s time to explore the beautiful valley on horseback.

During the rides, you will make your way through green meadows, tölt on smooth-riding trails, cross numerous rivers in the stunning river delta of Héradsvötn, ride past the beautiful waterfall Reykjafoss, and admire panoramic mountain views of Skagafjörður. Your guide will find peaceful spots to enjoy lunch breaks together with the horses.

After the last day's ride, it will be time to say goodbye to your horses and you will be able to enjoy a last bath in the hot tub as well as the last night of your “Home at Hestasport” tour. On your departure day, Hestasport will drop you off at the bus station in Varmahlíð. Of course, you are also welcome to extend your riding holidays and book some additional nights.
