Ride through the beautiful surrounding areas in Andalusia, Spain! Wolfgang, the owner of Horse Riding Andalucia and your tour guide, looked for somewhere to spend the rest of his life and he found this place in Spain and this is where he lives to this day. With its natural environment, you will love this horse riding holiday and always wanted to return, like Wolfgang always did.
Wolfgang, the owner of Horse Riding Andalucia, offers accommodation at a farmhouse, 20 meters adjacent to his house, more than 200 years old, built in the typical Andalusian way. It is completely renovated recently and fitted out for up to 6 people. There is a dining / sitting room, a kitchen with a washing machine, bathroom with shower, and three bedrooms, one with a 160 centimeters bed and the other two, each with a 140 centimeters bed. There is a small patio, but normally the small dead-end street is the outdoor sitting place. All rooms have electric heating and double glazing.
Sometimes, the house is occupied by non-riders, so in this case, Horse Riding Andalucia recommends alternatives. Firstly, there is a hostel in the neighboring village, Hospedería La Almijara. It is an average Spanish hostel. If someone likes a little more style and a bit of town life, Horse Riding Andalucia recommends a very nice hotel in the small town of Alhama de Granada, about 30 minutes by car. You'll find it under Hotel la Seguiriya, Alhama de Granada.
Wolfgang strongly recommends a bed and breakfast place about 15 minutes from his home. Cortijo Ceniza Jatar’s owner is an English woman and she is a host by passion. The only disadvantage is it’s for two persons only.
What Wolfgang did not know, when he bought his new home, was just how beautiful the surrounding areas were. There are more famous places not far from here, like the Alpujarras or villages like Frigiliana, places that are mentioned in every tourist guide, but some of them are just too famous for his liking, with all kinds of tourism and often 30% of foreign residents. In 1997, there was only one foreigner in Fornes, Wolfgang. Now there are more, but it still is a normal Andalusian village.
In the natural reserve, that starts some 100 meters from his door, you can ride or hike for days. Animals are abundant, including mountain goat, deer, eagle, and wild boar. People are not. Wolfgang says he will never get tired of this wonderful place. Of course, everybody can ride (or hike) around here. There are maps, though not very helpful, and there is the famous GR7 trail, which is poorly marked.
As a result, you hear of people getting lost. The worst “case” Wolfgang personally saw was of three students from Goerlitz in Germany, who took three days to travel from Fornes to Competa, a walk that can be done in 5 hours. Another “case” that was in the media some years ago, a Dutch woman got lost hiking alone in the mountains above Nerja. She was found after two weeks, alive.
On treks, many things can happen, such as a horse can lose a shoe or sprain a leg (so can a person). With Maike and Wolfgang, just one thing is impossible to happen: you cannot get lost! As almost nobody wants to do tours of more than one day, Wolfgang has created 10 different roundabout tours from two to eight hours, one of which is documented by photos and a video. Horse Riding Andalucia offers fixed tours, so a five-hour tour lasts five hours. On tours longer than 4 hours, you will take a break of about 30 to 60 minutes (lunch in the saddlebag).
Most of the saddles are the Spanish "Silla Vaquera Mixta", two are McClellan saddles, one is "Silla Charra" (Mexican), not quite recommendable. There is no English saddles. The bits are Spanish Vaquera bits, not so sharp and the metal chin chains are replaced by softer leather straps. Horse Riding Andalucia also uses the American hackamore, but only on horses that like them (some really do).
There will be one-day guided visit to the city of Granada during this holiday.
Wolfgang Kloss has raised and ridden horses for nearly 50 years. He moved to the village of Fornes in 2005. Wolfgang’s knowledge of the area, its history, and its wildlife makes for an unforgettable experience. He is a truly extraordinary character that will make your journey not only fascinating but educational and memorable.
Maike Denzler has lived and worked with Wolf since 2013. They plan and prepare the tours together and take care of their guests. Together, Wolfgang and Maike make a great team as your tour guides and will always be looking after your enjoyment and your safety.
Fornes, Granada is situated near Embalse de Los Bermejales, one of the cleanest reservoirs in Southern Spain.
You can cook your own meals in the accommodation, but if you stay out all day long, Wolfgang can hire a cook.
