Gardens

The hotel was named after the hibiscus flower and it is beautifully landscaped with tropical flowers and fruit trees. Enjoy the hotel gardens with this guide!

  • Hibiscus flower

This flower is called "papo" in Panamá. There are many hibiscus flowers in a variety of colors.

  • Bougainvillea

This flower is known as "veranera" in Panamá; it is a beautiful flowering vine. Veranera means “flower of summer.”

  • Coconuts

These are an incredible source of nutrition. The hotel has planted over 100 coconut palms and the food forest continues to grow!

  • Rose Apple

Also known as "pomarosa", this originates in Asia and now grows all over the world in tropical areas. The hotel's tree produces lots of these sweet fragrant fruits. In Central America, this fruiting tree is known as Jocote or Ciruela. The fruit has a hard pit like those of olives or plums, and tangy flesh that ripens in December and January.

  • Pineapples

The hotel has planted lots of pineapples in the gardens as well. Simply cut the top off a ripe pineapple and plant it! Pineapples take about one to two years to produce fruit.

  • Mandarin

Enjoy a sweet, tangy mandarin from the garden in January and February. Before they ripen, the hotel likes to use them just like limes to make a delicious margarita or squeeze it into a glass of water on a hot afternoon.

  • Noni

Studies have shown that the Noni fruit can be a great supplement for good health but beware, this fruit has a smell and taste that can really turn your stomach. If you’re brave enough, mix the Noni fruit with pineapples and bananas in a smoothie to hide the taste while still getting the benefits; the hotel's tree produces dozens of fruits.

  • Ti

The beautiful red Ti plant is a common topiary in Panama. The red leaves offer colorful contrast to the lush green gardens.

  • Blue Trumpet Vine

The Blue Trumpet Vine, also known as the Blue Skyflower, grows outside the Garden View guest rooms. Its beautiful blooms last just a day before falling to the ground.

Location

Playa Lagartero

Hotel Hibiscus Garden is located on Playa Lagartero; the beaches here are strongly affected by the tides. When it is low tide, the water recedes sometimes over one kilometer from the shoreline. During high tide, the water is just 100 meters from the hotel's doorstep. There is no strong current at the beach, making it the perfect spot to do stand up paddleboarding (SUP) or swim with the family.

Visit Coiba Island

Located in the Gulf of Chiriquí, Coiba National Park is a marine reserve off Panama’s Pacific coast. Coiba National Park (Nacional Parque Coiba) is comprised of a group of 38 islands including Coiba Island (Isla Coiba) and the waters surrounding them and covers 430,825 acres. Identified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2005, Coiba National Park offers rich and well preserved natural resources.

Coiba and the surrounding islands are home to four species of sea turtles, dozens of species of sharks, manta rays, dolphins, lizards, iguanas, crocodiles, and at least 130 species of birds. It is one of the best places to dive, snorkel, and birdwatch in Central America.

Playa Estero

The main beach in Santa Catalina is Playa Estero. You must cross a small river to get to the beach. During low tide, there may be one foot of water but during high tide, there can be as much as four feet of water. Enjoy sunbathing, surfing, and swimming! Nearly every day, there are great waves for surfing. Playa Estero is perfect for beginners and if you are a more advanced surfer, the waves at La Punta are for you!

Private Shuttle

Hotel Hibiscus Garden is located on Playa Lagartero, about 10 kilometers from Santa Catalina. The hotel offers a private shuttle service to and from Santa Catalina for all of the hotel guests. Whether you have a trip to Coiba Island planned, a surf lesson, dinner, or just a day at the beach, the shuttle service is available to you! Simply let the hotel know of your plans and they will shuttle you to and from Santa Catalina for 10 USD for one person or 5 USD per person for multiple passengers.
