Accommodation

The accommodation and attention to the customer in every aspect of the rides will all be to an excellent standard. The accommodations have been carefully chosen due to their quality and also because of the place for horses that will normally rest in a field next to the hotel where the group will spend the nights.

The accommodations along the way vary from charming rural inns in villages to delightful four-star hotels in Trujillo town. All rooms have private bathrooms. All of them are also very clean and comfortable.

In this itinerary, it is worth highlighting that for the accommodation in Guadalupe, the hotel is in the monastery itself, La Hospedería el Real Monasterio, an amazing complex that will give you an added insight into Iberian identity. Dinner at the Gothic cloister is a very special place.

There will be Wi-Fi in every place where the group will stay and it will be for free. There will also be towels, shampoo, and liquid soap in each room, and in some places, they have hair driers.

Program

If you are thinking of an amazing riding holiday, a relaxing break with great riding through gorgeous scenery on very well-schooled PRE horses, terrific hosts with wonderful hospitality, and a long-standing experience, then thiis is a great choice!

Level of riding

Intermediate to experienced riders means that you should be comfortable to walk, trot, and canter in a group in open spaces and your seat should be independent of your hands. On the rides, you will be riding for between four to seven hours a day so it is important to be as riding-fit as possible.

Pace and distance

The pace of this ride is moderate, depending on the terrain, with walks, trots, and good canters whenever possible. The distance covered on average will be 25 to 35 kilometers per day. The landscape will also change every day. Normally, riders will not walk leading horses, except for any circumstances that are required like 20 minutes on the third day downhill in this ride.

Horses

You will have excellent PRE horses, Hispano-Arabs, that were born at home, very much loved, very well trained, beautifully looked after, good-natured, and very easy to ride. They are all well-fed and in great riding shape.

Tack

The horses use the finest quality English saddles and tack with silicon seat savers and small saddle bags in front of the saddles. All the tack is in excellent condition and very comfortable for horses and riders. The horse tack quality is outstanding.

Helmet

Wearing a helmet is recommended. However, you can ride without a helmet but your insurance must clearly state that you are covered to do so. You will also be asked to sign a disclaimer.

Support van

A support van will follow the group during the whole week, meeting the group in the morning, for tapas breaks, lunches, at night, and also to move your luggage, so that you will have access to your luggage during the day at least three times or whenever necessary.

So, it will not be necessary to carry anything on the horse. You will also have some small saddle bags in front of the saddles for small things, such as bottled water, sunscreen, camera, and mobile gadgets. The service along the rides will be outstanding.

Non-riding companions

The ride is suitable for non-riding companions. They can travel in the support car and join in meals, dinners, and other activities, or if they wish to, they can rent a car in Madrid as well. They can move on their own and join the group for dinner.

Itinerary

Day 1: Madrid - Trujillo

Meeting point will be at Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD), then transfer to Trujillo. You'll have a short visit to the town and then a welcome dinner where you will learn about the ride and region on the map.

Day 2: Trujillo - Herguijela - Madroñera

Transfer from Trujillo to Herguijuela will be followed by the distribution of horses.

Ride through the “dehesa,” a cultural landscape exclusive of southern and central Spain. It is a multifunctional agrosilvopastoral system (a type of agroforestry). Used primarily for grazing, it produces a variety of products, including non-timberforest products such as wild game, mushrooms, honey, cork, and firewood.

The tree component is oaks, usually holm (Quercus ilex) and cork (Quercussuber). Dehesa is an anthropogenic system that provides not only a variety of foods but also wildlife habitat for endangered species such as the Iberian lynx and the Spanish Imperial eagle.

There will be a short afternoon ride through flat terrain to Madroñera, where you will spend the night and have dinner at a rural hotel. Time on the saddle will be five hours.

Day 3: Madroñera - Zorita

Upon departure after breakfast, you will ride by the cattle trail to Zorita. Experience good trots and canters in the morning through the dehesa, where cattle can be seen everywhere: local cows, sheep, goats, and Iberic pigs. Dinner and overnight will be at a rural hotel. Time on the saddle will be five hours.

Day 4: Zorita - Logrosan

You will follow the greenway, an old railway built in the 20s that due to the Spanish Civil War was never finished. Along the greenway, you will see objects and buildings that will remind you that there could have been a railway. During the ride, you can also enjoy the view over the impressive Villuercas landscape.

Dinner and overnight will be at a rural hotel. Time on the saddle will be five hours.

Day 5: Logrosán - Cañamero

Upon departure after breakfast, you will go through the vineyard in Cañamero, which is famous in Spain for good wines and olive gardens. There, the landscape changes to the beauty of Villuercasmountains, where you can see the Ruecas River canyons. You will follow the greenway. Dinner and overnight will be at a rural hotel. Time on the saddle will be five hours.

Day 6: Cañamero - Guadalupe

This day will be a short day from Cañamero to Guadalupe. You will go through the Cañada Real. You can enjoy the view over the impressive Villuercas landscape, where, on any day, you can observe vultures, eagles, azure-winged magpies, red-billed choughs, shrikes, and ravens.

Villuercas has been declared a geopark (UNESCO, 2011) because of its cultural and natural heritage, and of course, the great geological value of its relief, with a lot of interesting and visible geological elements. A comfortable lunch will be in the countryside. Time on the saddle will be four hours. Horses will go back to Trujillo by truck.

In the evening, the group will go to visit Guadalupe town and the Monastery. The Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe is located in the province of Cáceres at a location of great beauty, overlooking a valley surrounded by high mountains (Villuercas).

The town of Guadalupe, built around the monastery and founded in 1337, offers in its buildings a unique style with traditional architecture. Dinner and overnight will be at the Guadalupe Monastery Hotel.

Day 7: Guadalupe - Madrid

After breakfast, departure from Guadalupe will be at 10:00, in time for flights. All riders will be transferred at the same time, so if any rider needs to arrive in Madrid before, the rider will depart earlier or Jerebeque Trails can arrange a transfer (at extra cost).

Location

This ride starts in Trujillo and finishes in Guadalupe town, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO with the impressive Monastery of Guadalupe from the 14th century.

Guadalupe is located in the region of the Villuercas (a geopark by UNESCO). It is a historic town of cobbled streets, traditional houses, and monuments of great value, like the Sanctuary Monastery of Guadalupe (XIV century), declared a World Heritage Site (UNESCO).

The ride allows visits to other mountain towns belonging to the Villuercas, such as Berzocana, Cañamero, and Logrosan.

Trujillo is another very historic town with a mix of cultures, including the still-existing Roman remains from the Roman town of Turgallium, which nowadays is Trujillo. At the top of the town, there is a spectacular castle founded in the 10th century by Arabs. In the main square, many beautiful palaces were built by Spanish Conquistadors during the 16th century.

Many storks, eagles, and swallows can be seen circling the nests on the roofs of the churches and palaces in the Plaza Mayor, giving it a very good atmosphere.

Trujillo is very famous for its monuments and because it was the birthplace of Francisco Pizarro and his brothers, conquerors of Peru, as well as of Francisco de Orellana, who accomplished the first descent of the River Amazon. Pizarro’s equestrian statue stands in the Plaza Mayor.

The landscape during the ride will be spectacular, with holm and cork oaks woods and pastures called dehesa, the most emblematic landscape in Extremadura. You'll also see the impressive landscape of Villuercas, declared a geopark by UNESCO, perfect for riding with Jerebeque Trails Horse Riding's excellent horses.

Emilio knows the terrain and the trails very well and will show you interesting facts along the way.

Food

The food is another highlight of this trip. Mamen will delight you with the tapas breaks waiting for you in any unexpected place, with Serrano ham, Manchego cheese, olives, nuts, etc.

Lunchtime will be a relaxing and social affair with delicious home-cooked Spanish dishes such as paella, tortilla Española, Iberian pork BBQ, salads, and excellent quality soft cheese very typical from Extremadura, the “Torta del Casar.” This will be followed by a siesta in the peace of the countryside.

After the day riding, your dinner in the evening will be at around 21:00 and you will have a choice from different dishes and courses of local Spanish recipes. The dinner will be at your guesthouse accommodation. All the drinks, such as excellent Spanish red and white wines, beer, canned drinks, and water are included during the meals.
