Teenagers have two choices of accommodation.

Equestrian Centre Accommodation (Available from June 7 to August 30)

At the equestrian center, there is accommodation for 24 students. Students will be under the guidance of two group leaders who also live at the equestrian center. The accommodation is in multi-bedded rooms with en-suite bathrooms/shower facilities. Meals will be taken as a group in the dining room.

Please, remember that you will be sharing your room with other teenagers from all over the world, in order to improve your language skills! The equestrian center accommodation is suitable for teenagers who prefer to be in a group, it is also suitable for young students, teenagers who are a little shy and not confident in their language skills, and of course, for those teenagers who want to be near the horses and the Irish riding kids at all times! Key Institute has the following facilities:

  • 3 classrooms for language lessons
  • Stables for 70 horses and a large indoor hall (55 meters x 30 meters)
  • 2 outdoor all-weather rings (80 meters x 35 meters and 45 meters x 25 meters)
  • 3 cross country jumping courses (1 novice, 1 intermediate, and 1 all-weather course)
  • Comfortable clubhouse overlooking the indoor hall
  • Laundry room
  • Locker room with individual lockers for each teenager to keep their sports equipment and books, etc.

Host Family Accommodation

The host families are all well known to Key Institute personally and have been hosting teenagers for years. All the host families are specially chosen by the Key Institute for their friendliness and the comfort of their homes, guaranteeing an enjoyable experience for all. In each host family, there are two or three teenagers of different mother tongues. There are never two teenagers with the same language in a host family. %The host families are in Sligo town, Strandhill village, and in the area near the Key Institute. All the transport to and from the host family, Key Institute, and activities are in the Key Institute bus. The details of the host family will be sent to you four weeks prior to departure. Living in a family, you will quickly get to know the inhabitants of a country well-known for their friendliness. The host family accommodation is suitable for confident teenagers, it is also suitable for teenagers with a good level of English.

Program

This is a large international program with 50-60 students each week from Italy, France, Argentina, Switzerland, Germany, and Spain; there are also 50 local Irish teenagers who ride daily at the equestrian center. The combination of English language learning, horse riding, surfing, evening activities, and cultural excursions will surely be a holiday that a teenager will never forget.

Living in a foreign family, young people will learn about the daily life and cultures of the Irish people. Students will require a good level of physical fitness for the sports courses.

Language Course

The English language program is given by teachers who are approved by the Advisory Council for English Language Schools (ACELS), the Quality Assurance Body for English Language Teaching (ELT) in Ireland. It is guaranteed that there will be a personal and professional service and it is promised that there will be an educational and enjoyable holiday for guests.

The language classes run five days per week (Monday to Friday) for three hours per day. After testing on day 1, teenagers will be placed in a group with their English level. The course contains lessons in language, grammar, vocabulary, listening and writing skills, and conversation skills.

Equitation Course

The equitation courses run from Monday to Friday and Sunday. There are three courses suitable for all levels of riders (not complete beginners). The riding is a mix of lessons (indoor and outdoor), competitions, cross country jumping, outdoor riding to forests and mountains, and riding on Atlantic beaches.

Riders will also, under supervision and guidance, prepare their horses for riding, grooming, brushing, and putting on the saddle and bridle, etc. The equitation program is approved by A.I.R.E. (Association of Irish Equestrian Establishments).

The Horses

There are 70 horses (Irish Sport Horses) and ponies (Connemara Ponies) of all levels at the institute.

Equitation and Language Program

This program is ideal for teenagers who are 10 to 19 years old and are a novice to intermediate level riders (not complete beginners). The focus of the course is to learn and have fun! Riders will develop their riding with structured riding lessons in the indoor ring and riding outside in the countryside on safe, well-mannered horses, and ponies.

This equitation course is three hours daily and involves learning to prepare and tacking up your horse, as well as taking off equipment and brushing your horse or pony after riding.

Equitation and Language Program: Advanced Equitation - Focus on Jumping

Ideal for teenagers 10-19 years old, this equitation course is suitable for intermediate riders who are already taking jumping lessons at home. The course is three hours daily, from Monday to Friday with competition each Sunday. The focus of the course is jumping. Each day involves indoor and outdoor jumping lessons on suitable ponies and horses, jumping outdoors on the cross country jumping courses and usually one day per week, riding on the beach. This course is suitable for riders jumping 70 centimeters in competition

Equitation and Language Program: Intensive Jumping

This program is for good riders who have a high level of riding and compete at home. Their lessons will be in small groups on high-level horses/ponies under the personal direction of Mr. Declan Mc Garry. The course is three hours daily from Monday to Friday with competition each Sunday).

Riders will have indoor/outdoor lessons in jumping, focusing on jumping courses of jumps on competition horses. There is also cross country jumping and some outdoor riding in the countryside and beaches. This course is suitable only for advanced riders who jump 1 meter in competition.

Equipment to bring

  • Riding hat and a good outdoor riding coat
  • Riding boots, chaps or short boots, and half chaps
  • A small rucksack
  • A notepad and pens

Activities

On five evenings of the week, teenagers will have supervised activities as a group. The activities include going to the cinema, disco, barbeque, and surfing. The other two evenings are spent with the host family or at the equestrian center.

Nestled between Knocknarea mountain and Union forest, three kilometers from Sligo City (Population: 25,000), on the Western Atlantic coast of Ireland sits Carrowmore, the site of one of the oldest collections of Megalithic tombs and burial chambers, some dating to 3500 B.C. This area is said to be the first site settled by man in Ireland. This beautiful corner of Ireland is home to the Key Institute, the specialists in equitation, surfing, and language courses.

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Arrival by airplane

Key Institute has two representatives at Dublin Airport (DUB) each Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. They will await the arrival of the teenagers, assist them, and guide them to the Key Institute bus. Once teenagers have gotten their baggage, they should proceed to the arrivals gate.

There, at the “Meeting Point” in the arrivals area, the representative will be waiting for you. This is a simple procedure and the Key Institute has over 30 years of experience collecting teenagers. They will send the mobile number of the airport representative and the mobile number of the Key Institute director in case of any difficulties or flight delays.
