The Icelandic horses come from the horses that the Vikings brought with them when they settled in Iceland more than 1,100 years ago. There have been no horses imported to Iceland since the Viking Age. That is why Afdeling Horse has in this unique horse breed the Nordic own, original whole blood in the form of the strong, small töltere.
The nature that the horses have lived for centuries has made them healthy and tough. The Icelander's demands for a versatile transporter in the rugged terrain have created an exceptionally reliable, strong, and comfortable horse, incredibly confident in the legs and with lots of temperament and running will. The Icelandic horse is first and foremost a utility horse, where the greatest weight is placed on good riding abilities. It must be courageous and autonomous, willing and cooperative. It must be easy to hold and must have good adaptability and above all a good mind.
It is the horse's gaits that have more than anything else paved the way for the success that the Icelandic horses have received in recent years in most of Europe and North America. In addition to the three basic gaits in which all horse breeds are supposed to master (steps, trot, and gallop), Icelandic horses have other two gaits including tölt and pas.
Step is a firtaktet gait where the horse goes. Step is the only gait that is not elastic because the legs support the substrate longer than they float. Trot is a totaktig gait for a horse. The diagonal pair put down and lifted up at the same time. Between each diagonal pair of legs down the horse soars short duration. This gives the trotting four elements. The main requirement for trotting is that the diagonal benflytninger are regular and straight.
Tölt is a firtaks gait with the same relocation order as in steps: right hind legs, right front leg, left hind legs, and left front leg. The horse always has one or two legs in the ground where, in step, it always has two or three legs in the ground. There is nothing floated and it makes the species incredibly comfortable for the rider.
Gallop is the fastest of these. The horse has one side's front and hind legs before the other side's leg and lifts all legs at the same time, making the horse for a moment without contact with the ground. Pas is a two-stroke gait in which the horse moves pre-and hind legs on the same side simultaneously - and with a long hover phase before the next pair hits the ground. That's why the time is called flying passport. The speed is about 40 kilometers / hour and rides over a short stretch.
