Ride a Bike

Down a track and up to a lane or really quickly down a very steep, rocky mountainside; whatever your taste and ability, you'll find the ideal terrain to satisfy your thirst for excitement (or gentle relaxation); you choose. You'll have easy access to miles and miles of open tracks, lanes, and fantastic routes of just about every type and in the most exhilarating countryside; some are gentle, smooth, and short, others are just plain brutal.

Most take in picturesque villages, cafes, viewpoints, and many local country pubs. This is cycling country and you can even be matched up with some of the local cyclists who'll lead the way until you do. Hire a bike from Witherslack Farm or bring your own and you're ready to explore; saddle up and off yo go.

The farm is minutes from the Bay Cycleway; the Bay Cycleway-NCN 700 starts on Walney Island near Barrow and takes in the breathtaking scenery right round to Glasson Dock, south of Lancaster. This relatively flat route hugs the spectacular coastline of Morecambe Bay along quiet roads, greenways, canal towpaths, and promenades. The Bay Cycleway connects, signs, and improves 130 kilometers of relatively flat cycle routes around the Bay.

Climb a Mountain or a Little Hill

Quite literally a stone's throw away is Chapel Head Scar Lakeland climbing at it's best. Up to the face, along the Scar, down to the Derby for pub lunch and onto the next route. From your base at Witherslack Hall Farm, you are very near to arguably the best of UK's climbing. Challenging, breathtaking, and exhilarating mountain routes are just too plentiful to mention and there's a load of choices for all ages, levels, and styles.

Bouldering on rugged sea cliffs, scrambling on weathered screes, or scaling some of the Lakeland Classics can easily be accessed from your door and for a bit of practice or just for fun is Lakeland Climbing Centre, one of Europes best indoor walls. After a long day in the hills, it's time for you to head back home to unwind and view tomorrow's climb over the Estuary to the Silverdale Limestone faces.

Explore a Track

  • Walk, Hike, and Scramble

From the farmhouse doorstep, there are miles of footpaths, woodland tracks, and open common land to explore; with views across the estuary and Morecambe Bay.

  • Whitbarrow - Hervey Memorial Reserve

With stunning views of the Cumbrian fells and Morecambe Bay, this is a great place to walk and explore; rich in wildflowers and butterflies.

  • Whitbarrow - Howe Ridding Wood

Ancient woodland with an exceptionally rich and interesting range of flowering plants, Coppice management benefits several species of butterflies and a part of the reserve is a traditional orchard with Westmorland damson and apple trees.
