Program
Daily itinerary
Day 1: Saturday - Arrival and transfer to the hotel
Arrival in Lisbon and transfer at 5:30 p.m. from the meeting point at arrivals at Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS). You will travel south for approximately 120 kilometers to your accommodation in a rural comfortable house, called Uva do Monte/Serenada located in Grândola, one and a half kilometers from the sea.
Uva do Monte/Serenada is a very pleasant and charming rural house, with pleasant staff and equipped with the comfort of a modern hotel. Here, you will find a relaxed atmosphere where you can swim in the pool or rest in the comfortable rooms before your first day on horseback. Dinner at the hotel, so you can relax and rest. After dinner, you will enjoy your first night in Portugal.
Day 2: Sunday - Ride through the hills of Grândola
Today, Melides Almargem, LDA takes you by car to Passeios a Cavalo Melides, where the horses are stabled. You will start from here to go through the hills of Grandola where you will enjoy the beautiful cork trees landscape. After the first few canters, you will notice that the horses have wonderful character and sure-footedness. For lunch, a delicious picnic is prepared with typical Portuguese food, accompanied by fresh bread and good wine.
You will rest for a wild after lunch and ride back through the forests of centenary cork trees. You reach Coudelaria Quinta do Almargem where you will stable the horses. A short transfer of 10 minutes by car takes you back to your hotel, Uva do Monte/Serenada, where you can refresh and prepare for dinner at Fadista Restaurant in Melides.
Day 3: Monday - Ride through Eucalyptus forests
Today, you will traverse forests of eucalyptus, cork, and wild trees enjoying their distinctive perfume and ear the sound of the bark crunching underneath the horses’ hooves. You will stop for lunch at one of the most beautiful panoramic views in the area where is an old-ruin church. After the picnic, you can have a relaxing siesta. Afterward, you have the opportunity for some fast canters on the sandy trails that cross this part of the Portuguese countryside. Dinner at Quinta do Lourenço and overnight at the hotel, Uva do Monte/Serenada.
Day 4: Tuesday - Early ride to the beach to watch the sunrise over the dunes - Ride through the dunes
Today, you will ride from Uva do Monte/Serenada to the beach. It is a beautiful ride at first light as the sun rises over the dunes. There is the possibility of a beach canter before reaching a lovely picnic spot in the pine forest where your horses rest while you swim in the sea. After lunch at Melides, Santo André Lagoon, you will ride through the dunes and reach the beach stables where the horses will rest. After riding, there is a short transfer to the hotel, Uva do Monte/Serenada.
Day 5: Wednesday - Rest day at Serenada Enoturismo
You can walk through the pine forest, ride a bike, or just relax. Optional: you can visit the historical village of Alcácer do Sal. After breakfast, you will pack your bags and around 12 p.m., they will do a small transfer to the new hotel where you will rest and sleep. Nômade/Pinhal da Coutada is a small countryside resort where you can walk along the pine trees, ride a bike, or just relax in the biological pool. Dinner and rest in the hotel. Tourist visits can be organized at your request to the old village of Alcácer do Sal, visiting one of the oldest handmade saddleries in Portugal. Dinner and rest in the hotel.
Day 6: Thursday - Ride to the beach of Comporta through the rice fields
You will ride from Nômade/Pinhal da Coutada to the beach of Comporta area through the pine forest and vineyards fields. It is a beautiful ride at first light as the sun rises over the dunes. There is the possibility of a beach canter before reaching a lovely picnic spot in the forest area where your horses rest while you swim in the two natural lagoons. After lunch, you ride through the forest to the vineyards of Brejinho da Costa winery. Nômade/Pinhal da Coutada is where you stay overnight. Dinner will be at a local restaurant.
Day 7: Friday - Ride to the Sado River - Opportunity for a faster riding on red earth paths
You ride from Brejinho da Costa winery to the Sado River. Many opportunities for faster riding occur today. Your horses will carry you safely through rice fields. Sandy paths will be found where you can ride with the sound of the sea closer to you. On your return, you can enjoy a nice refreshing swim before arriving in Nômade/Pinhal da Coutada. Farewell dinner and overnight in Nômade/Pinhal da Coutada.
Day 8: Saturday - Transfer to Lisbon
After breakfast, transfer back to Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS) and depart.
About the tour
All the trails have been carefully planned and include a variety of terrain. Each day, you will visit a different area. The routes can be adapted to your riding skills. The rides will take you into the hills where you can appreciate the beautiful forest of Serra de Grândola; with famous cork trees that have grown for centuries in one of the unique untouched environments of Portugal.
You will have the chance to ride through the beach or Melides lagoon and feel the strength and unique beauty of the Atlantic Ocean on your feet. In this horse riding tour, non-riders are also welcome and the pace will be moderate with trotting and medium to long canters and some gallops.
Horses
Good-natured, sure-footed Portuguese Lusitanos trained for trails, using very comfortable sheepskin Portuguese military saddles.
Levels and experience
Intermediate. When booking, please provide them with information about your riding skills and experience to help them establish your ability for the holiday.
Pace
Moderate with trotting and medium to long canters. Some gallops.
Safety when riding
They recommend for your own safety that you wear a hard hat that meets current safety standards. It is important that your hat fits properly and that you feel comfortable and secure with it. Whilst riding or in the vicinity of horses, you must comply with the instructions of your guide. It is a condition of your booking that you accept the guide's authority to require you to dismount or to refuse you to ride if, for any reason, he considers that you may endanger your safety and the safety or welfare of the horses or any other person.
There is an inherent risk involved in horse riding and even the best-trained horse can put a foot in a hole or be startled by an animal out of the bushes. You may fall and get injured. Therefore, you are requested to sign an acknowledgment of the risks associated with riding and acceptance of personal liability. If you are not allowed to ride because you refuse to sign this disclaimer or if you refuse to use a hard hat, you will have no claim against them.
Instructors
Luis Lamas
Luís is 29 years old and he is a veterinarian. He is the vet of his horses and he lives with them. He finished veterinary school three years ago and did his practice in Spain for three months and in American Fondouk in Morocco, which is a voluntary association. He is also an endurance rider for 15 years and he is an experienced rider in the countryside. He does competitions of 40, 80, 120, and 160 kilometers.
Location
The tour will take place in Portugal. Melides Almargem, LDA has two different stables, one on the hills and one on the beach. The stables of the hills are located only 15 kilometers from the sandy beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and the beach stables are located only 500 meters from the beach.

Please book your flight to arrive at Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS). Transfer from and to the airport is included. Melides Almargem, LDA will pick you up from the airport. You need to arrive at this airport in order to complete the transfer of the group to the first hotel of your ride. The meeting point at the airport is located to the right after leaving the luggage collection area. You will be welcomed there by a representative who will drive you to your hotel.

If you choose to travel by car you can joint them at Lisbon’s Portela Airport (LIS); they can pick you up at the main door of the Church of Melides.
