Boutique Coastal trail riding and farmstay set on the stunning coastline of Northland New Zealand. Twelve horses run as a herd on the 35-acre horse property. A cozy comfy clean cabin provides idyllic lodging and access to some stunning farm riding. Follow private trails over steep terrain, pristine beaches and sweeping views of the pacific ocean. Some focus on horse connection and natural horsemanship.
During the holiday, you will stay at Sandy Bay Horses Farmstay in a very nice self-contained cabin which is suitable for couples. It also has a pull-out mattress as an option for a third person and it is fairly cozy.
There's a lovely clean cabin with bathroom attached outside. Comfortable linen, towels and soap / shampoo are provided. The cabin is an only 2-minute walk to a stunning, popular surf beach.
There are normally around 12 horses on the coastal property, ranging from ponies to larger horses- crossbreds, quarter horses and standardbreds being the most popular. The poster boy Blue Gum has been here from the start and is a real safe gentleman, Lil’ girl is a gorgeous quarter horse, calm and especially careful. Eve an attractive mare who is a very good leader of the herd, just to name a few. Stay with Sandy Bay Horse Trekking and get to know them even better!

Dark Bay, 7 years,Standard bred 18hh. Gentle GIANT, not really true to his breed looks more like a heavy thoroughbred. Wyatt is really really tall and pretty! He is amazing at his job, nice and responsive and sure-footed for a big horse.
Dark Bay, 8 years, Standard bred 15.1hh. Lead mare of the herd, very pretty mare who is a nice ride very confident and safe.
Dark Bay, 6 years, Standard Bred 14.3hh. Super friendly gorgeous horse! A guide favorite, Mercedes is super smart and clever. Mercedes is training and will become a very nice pleasure horse.
Grey, 18 years Quarter / stationbred 14.3hh. Poster Boy! He is a remarkable pony who is very responsive and safe, lovely paces, and was a 115m showjumper and holds some national pony club games records.
Chestnut flaxin mane, 18 years American Quarter horse 14.1hh. Western pleasure horse, very responsive and quiet pony great for kids. A big favorite!
15.2hh 7 years old Bay thoroughbred mare, started life in polo very nice classy riding horse for knowledgable riders.
15.2hh 9 years old Bay thoroughbred mare- Ellas full sister! also started out in polo and then trail, a lovely mare for intermediates and up.
Red Bay, 4 years, Standard bred 14.1hh. New girl on the block! Sandy Bay Horse Trekking team had to buckle and save her from a sad situation of starvation, after 2 months of feeding and TLC she is going strong and is a super smart wee horse, so much potential.
Chestnut, 17 years American Quarter horse 15hh. Western pleasure horse, knows the jog and lope, likes experienced riders.
Grey, 19 years Percheron cross 15.2hh. Merlin is very slow and can get a bit lazy! He is a great confidence booster for beginners.
Chestnut, 7 years American Quarter horse 15.2hh. Currently in foal due 2019 breeding season. Pleasure riding horse with a bit of spunk.
Kiley is the owner of sandy bay horse trails, with 30 + years working with horses you are in great hands! her skills range from trail, western, dressage and jumping. Her focus is now on connection work, lightness, training and teaching. She has trained with some of New Zealands top national coaches over the years and attended clinics in horsemanship and rider biomechanics.
Naomi has 30 + years in the horse industry, working alongside some of our greats - Mark Todd and Andrew Nicholson. Naomi has a wealth of knowledge in horses, both as an expert rider/jumper and trainer. She has come back to NZ recently after a long career in the UK working with horses. Her initial years saw her riding many trails and growing up riding in the New Zealand coastal environment.
Loretta Anderson adds her wonderful wealth of horse knowledge to Sandy Bay Horses. She rode from young in Pony club, showing and eventing. Has worked for Lion breweries promoting and working the NZ Shire horse team around the North Island with the All Blacks, and also worked at Hyde Park London Stables as a riding instructor for several years.
Two packed picnic lunches are provided on trail rides.
