Also known as The Last Forbidden Kingdom, Upper Mustang is one of the favorite trekking destinations in Nepal, though it was accessible only after the year 1992. Horseback riding trek to Upper Mustang is also ideal even for those travel enthusiasts who seek adventure despite being unable to walk for long hours on consecutive days. This horseback riding trek is sure to fill the hearts of the travelers with fondness of the landscape and culture of Upper Mustang without having to make the strenuous effort.
You will be accommodated for 3 nights in Kathmandu in a 3 star level hotel on B&B plan, for 2 nights in Pokhara in a resort on B&B plan. For the rest of the 9 nights spend while on the horse trek, you will stay at various tea house accommodations best available during the trek.
You will be picked up from the Tribhuvan International Airport Kathmandu, and escorted to your hotel in Thamel. Overnight in Kathmandu.
After early breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport to catch the flight to Pokhara. Upon arrival in the airport in Pokhara, a representative will meet you and transfer to your hotel in Pokhara. Meet with your guide and check the final preparation for the trek. Enjoy the rest of the day and evening with relaxation or walking by the Fewa Lake. Overnight in a hotel in Lakeside, Pokhara.
You will take the earliest flight to Jomsom which takes approx. 20 minutes to reach Jomsom.
Upon arriving in Jomsom, you will meet your team of horses and their horse man and begin your ride to Kagbeni. Riding your horse along the Kali Gandaki River, you will pass beautiful Ekleybatti village with small houses and old fortresses and reach Kagbeni after 4 hours of riding. Overnight at a lodge in Kagbeni.
After registering the permit in check point, you proceed along the bank of Kali Gandaki River and reach Tangbe village. You continue ride on horse crossing a couple of Buddhist monasteries and Chortens before entering Chhusang village. Then ride on rocky ridges for a couple of hours and reach Tsaile, where overnight stay in a lodge is scheduled.
Ride on horses uphill to Ridge canyon and continue ride on steep terrain to Taklam La Pass (3624 m). Relishing the mesmerizing view of Nilgiri Himal (7061 m), Yakawa Kang (6482 m), and Tilicho Peak (7134 m), and Damodar Danda (4975 m), you will pass several lush forests, water streams, and villages to reach Rachung Cave. From Rachung Cave, ride for a couple of hours and arrive at Syangboche. Overnight in a lodge.
Leave Syangboche for Drakmar with a beautiful panorama of Dhaulagiri ranges behind you. Come across many monasteries, Chortens, villages, and lush Himalayan forests on the way. After riding for 5 hours, reach Drakmar. Overnight in a lodge in Drakmar.
Leaving Drakmar, you will ascend on a steep trail and pass a couple of lush Himalayan rhododendron forest. Then ride downhill and climb a ridge to reach Ghar Gompa. Ghar Gompa is the oldest Buddhist monastery in Mustang that is also known as Lo Gyaker which means “Pure virtue of Lo”. From Ghar Gompa, ride and trek to Marang-La Pass (4230 m) which is the gateway to Lo-Manthang and all the way downhill riding until reaching Lo-Manthang. Lo Manthang is the walled capital of the Kingdom of Mustang and is composed of colorful dessert and rugged houses. Overnight at a lodge in Lo-Manthang.
Take a day to explore on horseback and hike up to Chosar village and Jhong Cave which is the largest man-made cave in Upper Mustang. Relish the panorama from Chosar and return back to Lo-Manthang. Overnight in a lodge.
Riding along a steep sandy trail, you will climb Lo-La Pass (3950 m) which leads to Tsarang. Ride along Tsarang Khola and cross an iron bridge over it to reach Tsarang. Then explore Tsarang Palace and monastery. Overnight at a lodge in Tsarang.
Come across many Mani walls, Chortens, and Buddhist monasteries before reaching Ghami. From Ghami, climb Ghami-La Pass (3250 m) and Nyi-La Pass (3932 m) which leads to Tamagaon. Ride along streams to reach Syangboche. Overnight at a lodge in Syangboche.
Riding and climbing Yamdo-La (4010 m), you will descend down to Bhena. Then ride along streams and pass Samar, then Tsaile. From Tsaile, follow the Kali Gandaki River and finally reach Chhusang (riding and trekking). Overnight at a lodge in Chhusang.
On the last day of the horseback trek, move on a rocky trail till you reach Tangbe. Then ride along small streams on a steep trail and pass beautiful small villages then reach Jomsom. Overnight at a lodge in Jomsom.
Fly off to Pokhara with a splendid view of the Himalayas. You can enjoy the day relaxing by the lakeside. Overnight at a hotel in Lakeside, Pokhara.
In case of a flight delay on the previous day from Jomsom to Pokhara, you will fly back to Pokhara in the morning. Later, fly back to Kathmandu in the afternoon.
After arriving in Kathmandu, leave for your hotel and enjoy the day leisurely or catch up on some last minute shopping or explore any landmarks you missed during your first day in Kathmandu. Overnight in Kathmandu.
The journey in Nepal comes to an end today! A representative of Sisne Rover will drop you off at the airport approximately 3 hours before your scheduled flight
This horse riding trek to Upper Mustang offers an alluring panorama of Dhaulagiri (8167 m), Nilgiri (7061 m), Saribung (6328 m), Manshail (6235 m) and other snow-capped mountains. The trek also reaches Rachung Cave, Ghar Gompa and Dzong Cave where the trekkers can observe the best-preserved form of Tibetan Buddhism. Trekking to the restricted areas of Upper Mustang on a horse's back helps the trekker to understand the way of life in the Himalayas.
During the trek you have all daily meals included. While in Kathmandu and Pokhara only breakfast is included.
