How about taking advantage of your stay in Mallorca to participate in a centered riding program, developed by Sally Swift, to improve your riding and your ability of feeling your horse?
Son Menut is a rustic estate on the island of Majorca, designed for and adapted to high-standard equestrian tourism. They are located in the Son Negre countryside, five kilometers from Felanitx, in an area steeped in rural tradition and history. The continued preservation of these is what has helped maintain the region's rustic charm and romantic setting, including a commitment to the natural environment and local wildlife. At Son Menut, you will find a quiet, laid-back atmosphere, with authentic Mediterranean cuisine and a close and friendly service forming the heart of your Majorcan experience.
Son Menut started in 1993 as a stud farm, though with every passing year, they have added amenities and improved their facilities. Today, they are the proud owners of a charming country hotel, a riding school with more than 70 horses and their own breeding program, and a restaurant where they showcase their own Dexter meat. They offer various horseback activities and accommodation in modern or rustic rooms, with their mission being to enhance active, high-quality tourism on the island in a natural and friendly environment.
At Son Menut, they believe that their greatest trait is the quality and personal service they offer to their guests. After more than 20 years in this sector, their entire team works day after day to uphold the essence of Son Menut and make all who visit a part of the family. Son Menut is first and foremost a family business, changing and growing as it passes through the generations; most recently from father to daughters. Pilar became a full-time member of the business in 2017, with Francina joining a few years later in 2019.
The two sisters manage the different areas of agrotourism, playing to their respective backgrounds, training, and passions whilst supporting each other and their family's legacy. Together, Pilar and Francina continue to strive for equine tourism of the highest quality, seamlessly combining their history with modern practices and techniques to offer a truly unique experience. Sustainability and the natural environment feature prominently in their vision of Son Menut, adding to the already long history of friendly and familiar service.
While the various agricultural components of the business, not to mention the sheer number of animals, do present their own challenges, the sisters are sure to tell you that Son Menut has many ways to bring a smile to their faces, and yours as well. Son Menut is an open and multidisciplinary space where everyone feels at home. After renovations and improvements made to Son Menut in 2017 and 2018, they have new, beautiful, and spacious rooms with balconies and stunning views of the terrace, riding arenas, and vineyards.
Please let them know if you have requested a late check-in (after 6:00 p.m.) and be aware that the Son Menut reception and restaurant close at 10:00 p.m. If they do not know your arrival time, they will not wait around for you. If leave early on Sunday (before 9:00 a.m.), you must pay at reception on Saturday and can have breakfast at 8:00 a.m. before leaving.
If leaving on Sunday before 8:00 a.m., you must also pay on Saturday and can ask for a cold breakfast to go. They provide a laundry service for an extra cost. If you would like to use this service, you can leave a bag with your clothes (with a name and room number) at the reception. They will be washed within 48 hours, maximum.
The new superior rooms (29 square meters and balcony) are priced similarly to the standard rooms and have a capacity of up to four people. They are located next to the main building and above the restaurant’s dining room. Each room is equipped with satellite TV and telephone, Wi-Fi, climate control, an environmentally-friendly mini-bar, water kettle, safety deposit box, bathrooms with shower, towels, amenities, and a balcony as well. These new rooms have a modern style and are designed with an entrance dressing room in which to change after a riding session or trail.
They also have a superior room with accessibility and amenities for people with disabilities (35 square meters and terrace). The junior suite (41.5 square meters and balcony) is the largest room with a double bed, providing guests exclusivity and additional comforts for their relaxation: comfortable armchairs for lounging, a private Nespresso coffee machine, water kettle, and plush bathrobes to complete the getaway experience. Like all other rooms, the junior suite is fully equipped with satellite TV, Wi-Fi, and other amenities. The junior suite has a maximum capacity of four beds and a cot.
Standard rooms have been upgraded this year to improve your stay. They combine a rustic aesthetic with modern comforts, remaining true to the authentic Majorcan style without compromising convenience. There are a total of six rooms and are available as single or double occupancies. Standard rooms are fully equipped with satellite TV, telephone, Wi-Fi, climate control, an environmental-friendly minibar, water kettle, safety deposit box, bathroom with bathtub, towels and amenities, and balcony as well. Cots can be arranged at no additional cost.
Enjoy an innovative way of learning classical principles of riding, using body awareness, centering, and imagery. Centered riding® is not a separate seat or discipline but encompasses all seats and styles of riding. It teaches a language that allows clearer communication between horse and rider. Through increasing body awareness, inhibiting old patterns, and replacing them with a more balanced, free, and coordinated use of self, both horse and rider can move more freely and comfortably, and develop their best performance.
As you learn and experience the principles through your horse's motion and responses, you and your horse tune in to each other and work together in harmony. Most of all, it makes riding more enjoyable for horses and riders. At Son Menut, they offer you the services of a licensed centered riding instructor (Julia Litten, Instructor Level I) and a wide variety of horses to practice on. There will be four sessions of riding lessons, including groundwork with a total of eight to nine hours during the week, and a transfer to visit "Portocolom Bay". There is also the possibility of doing ground or liberty work.
On the first day, you start with a theory lesson and some groundwork. The program includes a guided tour around the Son Menut grounds on Monday by Francina and Pilar, including its history as well as some housekeeping pointers. You will end by the terrace with a glass of wine and tapas. You will also be welcomed with a reusable bottle. The riding school is open from Monday to Saturday. All riders must arrive 15 minutes before the start of the class to prepare the horse. The preparation of the horse takes place during the training and allows you to do one hour of horse riding, not 45 minutes.
For all beginners, if you do not have any equipment, Son Menut can lend you a helmet and boots. For all riders, you can also book extra classes, but it depends on the availability of the instructors. Every Monday, a tour is performed in order to show the customers the surroundings of the property, which horses are still in active activity, which horses are still in training, and which have already retired. This is a small explanatory package from Son Menut. It depends on the weather, but it normally starts at 4:30 p.m.
Completing the Son Menut equine team, Julia is passionate about the whole health of the horse; physical and emotional. Learning with Julia gives clients a different perspective on their relationship with their horses.
The retreat will take place in Felanitx, Mallorca, Spain. Son Menut is situated in the countryside of Felanitx, 40 kilometers from Palma de Mallorca.
You will be served daily meals included in the price. The menu is 90% gluten-free and 70% lactose-free. Please inform Son Menut on booking time if you have some special diet requests such as vegetarian, gluten-free, lactose-free, etc., or some allergies to make sure they can adapt the full board menu to you. Son Menut offers a variety of seasonal dishes featuring local products. In fact, they are the proud producers of many of the ingredients they serve. You can savor their tasty Dexter beef from the cattle raised and graze on the land.
Likewise, there are a variety of seasonal vegetables grown in the garden and fruit trees that they use to provide different fruits to the restaurant. In the kitchen, they prioritize the taste of home and take the utmost care with the flavors used to create traditional Mediterranean dishes. You can book a table at the reception. The restaurant "à la carte" is closed on Wednesday (only barbecue menu).
