Western riding

At Churchtown Morgans, the stables at St Hilary Equine Centre, they specialise in Western riding and have entered their horses very successfully into numerous competitions all over the United Kingdom. The Morgan - Morgan / cross horses are ideally suited to Western riding. They offer lessons at St Hilary Equine Centre where you can learn all the skills necessary for Western riding.

If you are hoping to go on a ranch style holiday in America in the future to either try out Western riding or to improve your skills, why not visit St Hilary Equine Centre for lessons, a comprehensive course of Western riding or a few days of refreshing your skills. St Hilary Equine Centre is pleased that several ranches in the USA are happy to recommend St Hilary Equine Centre and Churchtown Morgans as a basis for learning to ride Western style before going 'over the pond' to experience the real thing themselves.

Trail riding

Anything from a one-hour trek on local bridleways, to a full days riding on the west Cornwall moors and in the beautiful Cornish countryside.

Natural Horsemanship

The programme of Natural Horsemanship is philosophically based on the needs and wants of the horse and you will base your activities on what the horse enjoys and is happy to do. St Hilary Equine Centre places great emphasis on respect between the horse and the individual, which is an essential aspect of learning to work with and ultimately to ride the horse and to ride the horse properly.

Natural Horsemanship forms the basis of all the horse orientated activities offered at St Hilary Equine Centre. In addition to learning to approach the horse with respect and understanding, you will learn all the essential skills such as learning how to catch your horse, grooming, leading, familiarizing individuals with riding tackle, the parts of the horse and horse characteristics, etc.

Natural Horsemanship is an essential aspect of the learning to ride programme both in respect to the activity of learning to ride itself and as an integral part of a learning to ride holiday. It is important for the beginner to form a relationship with the horse as this increases the confidence and understanding of the individual. Ideal for the beginner as an introduction to really learning about the horse in its true sense and how you can work together - horse and human. It is invaluable for all other levels of experience for a richer, deeper bonding between horse and rider, and possible solutions to problems you may have encountered with your own horse.

Learn to ride holidays

As a complete beginner, the week will include an introduction to all aspects of stable management which helps to settle any nervousness (on your part, not the horse). You will learn how to catch your horse, tie them up, and groom them. You will learn tacking and untacking of your horse and turning out your horse. As well as Natural Horsemanship, stable management, and getting to know the horses, the amount of time you spend on horse-related activities is totally up to you depending on how comprehensive you would like your programme to be.

St Hilary Equine Centre's horse riding activities are based on how well the individual progresses. You learn in your own time, not theirs. It is totally up to the individual how much they would like to learn and what they want to accomplish. For this reason, they do not mix accomplished riders with beginners or novices and therefore they will never hold you back in your progress.

Along with their unique natural horsemanship approach to their horses, you will find your confidence and understanding build quickly. Depending on what you would like to accomplish and how confident you feel, you will be introduced to how it feels to sit bareback on a horse. You will be introduced to barrel racing where you complete a circuit of the riding area being initially led and progressing to riding at a walk.

According to how well you progress and what you would like to accomplish, it is quite common to be trotting and cantering by the end of the first day. On the first day, you will also be introduced to the saddle, both the English and the Western saddle, so that you can compare how each feels to use.

All the programmes of activities will vary with the individual but a typical first day would include going into the field and catching your horse, leading and bringing the horse into the stables, grooming, putting on the halter and getting to know your horse.

This is only an overview of what can be achieved even on the first day of learning to ride. The most important thing to remember is that whatever means of learning to ride you choose, the whole programme is planned and devised around what you feel able to do and what you would like to accomplish.

Confidence building at all levels

From a nervousness around horses to improving your confidence in the saddle, St Hilary Equine Centre has programmes to suit all levels. As a complete novice to horses, they offer a gradual introduction at your pace in order that your confidence grows to the level that you are happy with, whether it be overcoming a fear of horses or increasing your confidence in working with them.

For those that are more experienced and would like to feel more confident on a horse and improve the whole solidity of your riding, they believe that bareback riding will provide the answer as well as a memorable experience. Feel your confidence grow as you discover a level of relaxation and command you had perhaps forgotten.

Family bonding holidays

St Hilary Equine Centre always tries to ensure that whatever you choose to do, it will be a wonderful and memorable experience which bonds and unites a family unit in a shared experience that is hard to find in today’s technological world. A horse riding holiday at St Hilary Equine Centre offers families an active, dynamic, and involved experience which both adults and children can share and delight in.

The whole family can learn to ride together or accomplished riders can be part of the unique experience involved when one of their family members learn to ride. Children usually find it relatively easy to learn to ride and tend to learn quickly and well. Children and adults alike will enjoy meeting and interacting with the beautiful and friendly horses.

For children, horse riding activities will provide memories they will never forget. They will experience great delight in interacting with both the horses and the adults in their family.

From a non-riding family to those with individual experience not shared by other members of the family to a family experienced in riding, St Hilary Equine Centre can accommodate all needs and requirements. You cannot beat the shared experience of a riding holiday to bond and unite a family. Short breaks and family bonding activities will be dependent on the time available and the specific requirements of the customer.

Beach and coastal rides

Take a ride on one of the many beautiful, local Cornish beaches. There is the beautiful Mount's Bay with two miles of safe, sandy beach; perfect to allow you to do just that. (Please note that beach rides are dependent on the tides and the availability of the beaches.)

Carriage driving

Take the reins and enjoy the timeless pleasure of wandering down the lanes, exploring the beautiful Cornish countryside under true horsepower, or learn the preliminaries of breaking a horse to harness.

Equine assisted therapy

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is an emerging field of psychotherapy which uses interaction with horses as part of a treatment to facilitate emotional growth and learning. The treatment encompasses a collaborative effort between a skilled and qualified therapist, a horse professional and the horse, and due to its effectiveness and intensity is classed as a brief intervention with clients.

The EQUUS programme at Churchtown Morgans is a model sponsored and produced by the Equine-Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA), the professional body for this treatment field. It is a 100% ground-based programme with no ridden element.

The service users learn about themselves by participating in activities with horses and then processing feelings, behaviours, and patterns both in one-to-one and group sessions with the therapists.

EAP has been found to be very effective in the following areas:

  • Challenging clients in a non-threatening manner
  • Rapidly breaking down defence mechanisms
  • Providing immediate cause and effect solutions
  • Captivating and holding the attention
  • Promoting change from dysfunctional to successful patterns

Equine-assisted psychotherapy has been shown to illicit a powerful and effective therapeutic effect and can have an incredible impact on individuals, families, and groups.

Set in an idyllic corner of the county, with many of Cornwall's prettiest coves and sandy beaches nearby, The Old Vicarage is an ideal place to stay to unwind and visit some of Cornwall’s greatest assets in the UK. St Hilary Equine Centre is an ideal place to relax in a peaceful, rural location in the Cornish countryside, a short walk to the beach and majestic Cornish coastline and in the midst of the naturally stunning landscape, steeped in history, myths, and mysteries.

Cornwall has been described as the most picturesque county in Britain with its beautiful countryside, natural woodlands, rivers, estuaries and desolate moorlands. Moors make up much of this part of Cornwall with barren, windswept scrubland interspersed with rocky tors and granite outcrops. West Penwith, a short distance from St Hilary Equine Centre boasts the most amazing views over the high moorland. The area has numerous beautiful wooded areas, many of which have trails for walking, cycling, and horse riding with a diversity of plants, animals, and bird species.

The south-west of Cornwall is encompassed by numerous beaches from the pristine white beaches of Praa Sands to the family-friendly nearby beach of Marazion with its magnificent view of St Michael's Mount. The coastline can be enjoyed by walking the extensive coastal pathways.

The south-west of Cornwall also has a rich archaeological heritage with sites identified from pre 8000 BC. Buildings and monuments are evidence of the varied history of the Cornish peninsula from the chamber tombs of the Neolithic period such as Lanyon Quoit to the remains of the hill forts of the iron age.

You will not have to travel far to see reminders of Cornwall's tin and copper mining past. There are countless derelict engine houses, mine shafts, and buildings dotting the coasts and countryside.

The coastline scenery of this part of Cornwall is spectacular in its diversity and natural beauty. There are rugged isolated rocky cliffs and outcrops to desolate beaches approached by gently sloping moorland.
