This is a relaxed self-catering horse riding holiday staying at a cozy country cottage at Stormy Hill Horse Trails. Stormy Hill Horse Trails are situated in the midlands of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Come and explore the picturesque farming area with extensive forested plantations, perfect for your riding holiday. You will ride out each morning up the old wagon trail and into the forest. Marvel at the views and take in the peace and tranquillity on Stormy Hill Horse Trails' sturdy steeds. All Stormy Hill Horse Trails' horses are friendly and easy going bred for their chilled personalities and surefooted paces.
The Stormy Hill Horse Trails' country cottage has a double bedroom, a twin bedroom, and a single bedroom. The bedrooms all have wardrobes and mirrors. Bed linen and towels are provided. There is also a double sleeper couch in the living room. One bathroom is equipped with both ball and claw bath and spacious shower.
It has a large kitchen and dining room with gas hob and electric oven. The cottage also has a wood stove for the cooks that wish to go back in time. The kitchen also has a fridge / freezer, a toaster, a kettle, and a microwave. Crockery, cutlery, pots, and pans are provided.
The living room has a wood fire and stunning views onto the surrounding countryside. A bag of wood is provided for guests to enjoy the fire. The cottage has its own garden complete with braai (barbeque). Parking is provided in the grounds of Stormy Hill Horse Trails.
Arrival at Stormy Hill in the afternoon to let you settle into the self-catering cottage. An introduction to the horses at afternoon feed time.
The program starts around 08:30. It includes finding out about the horses different personalities while they are in their stables; brushing the horses and general handling. This helps you to get to know your horse. After grooming and tacking up the horses, you'll ride in the training ring to get used to the horses, then you set off for your trail ride.
This is tailored for the individual needs and goes at the pace that Stormy Hill Horse Trails think it fits for the riders. It normally encompasses going up and down hills and crossing a stream or two. This usually takes approximately three hours. You may be asked to dismount and lead your horses depending on the ground conditions in different sections. (Some areas tend to get a bit slippery at times).
When you get back, you'll take the bridle and saddle off and finally you give the horses some apples or carrots and let them out into the fields to graze.
This program will take up most of the morning. Approximately four and a half hours. This is a relaxed ride in the open countryside. There is some beautiful scenery and the dogs usually follow along.
You are then free to enjoy the afternoon at your leisure. Maybe see some of the Midlands Meander, have a braai (barbeque) or just take a stroll on the property.
You will be going out for a trail ride of approximately 3 hours. Stormy Hill Horse Trails usually take a different route in the forest each day to show you more of the surrounding countryside.

You'll go out for a trail ride. This is a shorter ride of about two hours. You will then be able to check out of the cottage at your leisure.
Caroline has been taking people out on horse trails for many years. She trains all the horses at Stormy Hill both in ground work and for riding. Most of the horses here have been bred and raised by her from foals to being friendly easy going trail horses. She uses natural horsemanship methods from various sources.
You will be staying at Stormy Hill Horse Trails' self-catering cottage which means you will prepare your food yourself.
After your horse riding in the morning, you will have time to explore the surrounding area in the afternoon. Your own transport will be required. There is the Midlands Meander with its craft shops. Take a canopy tour on a zipline in the Karkloof. Eat at quaint cafes and restaurants. Visit the Howick waterfall and see the zebras at the Umgeni Nature Reserve.
