Muhu Island has a kindergarten, basic school, nursing home, post office, pharmacy, out-patients’ center, shops, and three churches. Moreover, you will enjoy a long ride to one of the following places:

Pädaste Manor

Pädaste forests are well known for its fascinating colors and a large variety of different flowers especially in spring and in autumn. In summer, the Pädaste Cove invites you for a swim.

On the Islet of Võilaid, young horses and bovines live freely. Pasturing cattle creates ideal conditions for a very rare species of bird in Europe called dunlin (Calidris alpina schinzii). There are about 140 pairs of these birds in Estonia.

Koguva is the best preserved living village complex in Estonia. The center of Muhu Museum is Tooma Farm, which was the home of the well-known Estonian writer Juhan Smuul.

The north-eastern coast is hemmed in with smaller and bigger cliffs. The approximately 450 meters long Üügu cliff is the largest and most attractive of Muhu Island. Visit the "Goat Chamber" and "Roebuck Room" caves and the magic Eye Spring.

Muhu stronghold

In the old times, Muhu together with Saaremaa were the most densely populated areas in Estonia. The eight-meter-high walls of the stronghold were built by people. Muhu stronghold was a scenery for one of the last battles in 1227 before Estonians were conquered by the Livonian Order. The Chronicle of Henry of Livonia speaks about 20,000 men beleaguering the castle for five days, Older Rhime Chronicle of Livonia speaks of 2,500 were being killed and only one managing to escape. While building a dam over the small strait in the 19th century, the stones from the fort's strong walls were used as the filling material. A memorial stone dedicated to the tragic historical event is in the yard of the stronghold.

Tamse School

Tamse School started its activity lead by Mihail Pallas in the old manor house in 1919. The latter was the headmaster until 1932 when the school was taken over by Karl-Osvald Juht, who managed the school until his deportation in 1941. K.O. Juht continued active social life at Tamse. The number of pupils in the school was 50 to 80 years old before the war. The number of pupils increased when it became a six-year school in 1930. In 1940, the construction of a new school house according to the design of Jaagup Linnakivi started at Tamse. Due to the war, the work was hindered and was actually never completed.
