In the old times, Muhu together with Saaremaa were the most densely populated areas in Estonia. The eight-meter-high walls of the stronghold were built by people. Muhu stronghold was a scenery for one of the last battles in 1227 before Estonians were conquered by the Livonian Order. The Chronicle of Henry of Livonia speaks about 20,000 men beleaguering the castle for five days, Older Rhime Chronicle of Livonia speaks of 2,500 were being killed and only one managing to escape. While building a dam over the small strait in the 19th century, the stones from the fort's strong walls were used as the filling material. A memorial stone dedicated to the tragic historical event is in the yard of the stronghold.
Tamse School started its activity lead by Mihail Pallas in the old manor house in 1919. The latter was the headmaster until 1932 when the school was taken over by Karl-Osvald Juht, who managed the school until his deportation in 1941. K.O. Juht continued active social life at Tamse. The number of pupils in the school was 50 to 80 years old before the war. The number of pupils increased when it became a six-year school in 1930. In 1940, the construction of a new school house according to the design of Jaagup Linnakivi started at Tamse. Due to the war, the work was hindered and was actually never completed.
