This horse riding tour is designed for people who love nature and horses and are keen on discovering different cultures. Lipizzaner horses will help you enjoy some astonishing parts of Transylvania. The Transylvania on Horseback team will make sure you will experience local hospitality, enjoy the authentic guesthouses and the traditional food prepared with fresh, local ingredients. Come and feel the joy and excitement of horseback riding over the Transylvanian highlands and through authentic villages!
The accommodation will be provided in double rooms in traditional houses in Viscri. These houses are part of the cultural patrimony of Transylvania and they were restored by Mihai Eminescu Foundation together with local craftsmen. The houses are managed in the form of social business, in collaboration with families from the village.
Dinner and accommodation for the night that precedes the tour are included in the package.
For reasons that take into consideration man and horse safety, the maximum weight allowed on a horse is 90 kilograms.
Riders will be spending 4 to 6 hours in the saddle every day. Except for expert riders, Transylvania on Horseback cannot offer children under 18 years old the same packages as for the adults, however, they can arrange your child's special first experience of riding a horse in complete safety by using a lunge line.
All of the horses are Lipizzaner, a breed born in the 16th century in Lipiça, today's Slovenia, and developed for the exclusive use of the Habsburg monarchy. The Lipizzaner is regarded as the true horse of royalty. This is one of the oldest breeds in Europe, the 400 years of selective breeding helped enhance the horses’ grace, intelligence, and power to the level of elegance you can see today. They are especially famous for the impressive dressage performances they give at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.
All pure-bred Lipizzaner horses trace back to six classical foundation stallion lines: Pluto, foaled in 1765, Conversano, foaled in 1767, Maestoso, foaled in 1773, Favory, foaled in 1779, Neapolitano, foaled in 1790, and Siglavy, foaled in 1810. Two additional lines were later accepted as equal to the classical six lines: Tulipan and Incitato. The Incitato line was started in Transylvania by the Bethlen Count in his private stud in Beclean; the Lipizzaner is, thus, also part of Transylvanian heritage.
Cristian has been working in Viscri and other villages from Transylvania for the past seven years. Collaborating closely with the Mihai Eminescu Trust, he is strongly involved in empowering locals and encouraging them to act on improving their livelihoods and safeguarding their cultural heritage and identity. He founded and manages Transylvania on Horseback, an equestrian tour operator based in Viscri, and Experience Transylvania, a social economy project that promotes cultural tourism through a network of authentic guesthouses scattered throughout Transylvania an Maramureș.
Carmen, who will be guiding the trail rides, is a horse riding instructor. She has a strong passion for horses and a gift for enabling the people she works with to discover the same love that she has for riding. She is motivated by the opportunity to use her experience to support riders in uncovering the special emotions that a connection between man and horse can offer.
All the landscapes and villages that you are going to discover are part of the Transylvanian heritage and they are in one of the most unspoiled regions in the world. Transylvania on Horseback is an equestrian tour operator based in Viscri, arguably the best-known village in Romania!
Located 80 kilometers north of Brașov, Viscri is an eight centuries-old picturesque Saxon village tucked between green, forested hills. The Viscri fortified church, built atop a hill, gave the German name of the village, Weisskirch/White Church, and it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The reasons to come there are plenty and Viscri is a great spot to begin a horse riding adventure through Southern Transylvania, one of the most unspoiled regions in Europe. Actually, Transylvania was listed in 2016 as the number 1 travel destination in the world and recently as one of the Top 10 Winter Destinations in Europe.
Saddling up and going on a trail ride in such an interesting place is a treat! And so are the days spent there, discovering the local culture and enjoying meals slowly cooked out of locally grown produce. Transylvania on Horseback tours are done in close alliance with Experience Transylvania and guests are hosted in traditional guesthouses scattered throughout the region.
Meals are composed of area-specific dishes and are prepared by housewives who manage homes with local ingredients. On request, they can also cook vegetarian dishes. All three meals are included in the package.
