Itinerary
Day 1 (Monday)
Copper Cayuse Outfitters will meet you bright and early at the trailhead for the start of the expedition. Your horse and guides will be ready, and they'll load your camp goods into the trailer. The initial day involves a 16-kilometer ride to the base camp, gaining approximately 2000 feet in elevation while enjoying stunning mountain views.
At the camp, you'll be reunited with your luggage (maximum weight of 30 lbs) and settle into your tent. Your base camp offers amenities such as a hot shower, outdoor plumbing, and tents mounted on platforms for added guest comfort. A hearty dinner will be served around 6 p.m., followed by relaxation around the campfire.
Day 2 (Tuesday)
After a satisfying breakfast, prepare your horses or allow your wrangler to handle it for you. The day's adventure involves circumnavigating the camp, featuring flat riding perfect for exercising the horse in faster gaits. This ride includes mountain views, river crossings, single tracks, and a scenic ride along Birkenhead Lake.
Don't forget your swimsuit for a refreshing swim in the lake before returning to camp for supper. Most guests find themselves hitting the bunk for a restful sleep before it gets dark.
Day 3 (Wednesday)
Following a morning feast, you'll either trailer or ride to the Li-lik-hel mine. Explore the original mine site and witness how old hard rock miners extracted gold ore by following veins in the rock. Discover how the First Nations, miners, and loggers utilized the land while still enjoying its beauty.
You return to base camp late in the afternoon for your final night, and many guests stay up late to witness the mesmerizing light show put on by the stars.
Day 4 (Thursday)
After breakfast and repacking the trailer, embark on a different set of trails to return to the trailhead. Enjoy breathtaking mountain views along the way and take the opportunity to bid farewell to your horse and wrangler at the end of the day.
Note
CCO reserves the right to decide the eventual destination of the ride based on trail conditions on the day of the ride. This is for the safety of the horses and riders. For more information, ask Copper Cayuse Outfitters.

Weight Limit (please read)
The riding weight limit is 250 lbs; however, this guideline depends on factors such as a rider’s fitness, height, and riding experience and is not a simple rule. An experienced, balanced rider places far less strain on a horse than someone new to riding, and Copper Cayuse Outfitters' priority is always the comfort and long-term health of their herd. Their herd also varies in size, and not all horses can carry this weight limit.
Please keep these factors in mind when booking. While they do their very best to accommodate all guests within the 250 lb limit, they reserve the right to cancel a booking if they do not have a suitable horse available, as the horses’ wellbeing is always their top priority. Copper Cayuse Outfitters truly appreciates your understanding and care for the animals.

You should plan on arriving 15 minutes prior to your ride start time.
- From Whistler follow Highway 99 North straight thru the stop light in Pemberton to Mt Currie. Remember the speed limit in Mt Currie is 30K.
- Do not make the right turn at the little white church in Mt Currie to follow Highway 99. Continue straight on, over the railway tracks headed for D’Arcy.
- 16 k down the road you will take a left turn on a dirt road onto Old Portage Road and immediately cross the railroad tracks.
- Continue up the road for about 1 km and you will see a big tree in the middle of the road with a sign saying Birkenhead River Road, turn left in front of the tree with the blue arrow.
- Continue up the Birkenhead River Road (Birkenhead Forest Service Road) under the power lines, just after you go under the powerlines you will see a pull-out on your left, park there, that is the trailhead.
