Program
Daily itinerary
Day 1
After settling in, you will get to meet your horse for the length of your stay. After that, 9 Finger Ranch will give you a quick “how to ride lesson” before taking you out on your very first ride: a one-hour ride at the ranch (Homebound).
Day 2
This day will bring you into Riding Mountain National Park with our Jumpstart, a two-hour tour with a break at a rustic campsite.
Day 3
The day shows you a different corner of the national park with our half-day ride. Enjoy lunch in the national park.
Day 4
Your last day starts with a two-hour ride Buckaroo on the ranch property and includes a visit to the cattle herd. Use the chance to ask the cowboys all the questions you have about the more traditional way of raising beef cattle.
About the holiday
This package is best suited for people with at least little riding experience but is doable for beginners as well. Non-riding companions are welcome to come along and enjoy nature, ranch life, and tranquility.
Your rides are only walking pace (which means going slow).
Please note that there are no further activities scheduled other than the rides included in your package. They would be happy to share information on what to do in the area. *Please note regarding kids: As this package includes quite a bit of riding, 9 Finger Ranch recommends considering other packages when you have (inexperienced) kids younger than around 12 years.
Riding adventures
Homebound
Never been on a horse or has it been a few years? Homebound allows you to warm up to riding by exploring 9 Finger Ranch's home trails.
Jumpstart - introductory ride in the national park
This ride will bring you to Riding Mountain National Park for an introductory two-hour ride. Mid-way through, you will stop at a rustic campsite within the park to give you a chance to stretch your legs.
Half-day ride
Feeling comfortable on a horse and would like to try a longer ride? Go for this half-day ride into Riding Mountain Park. In this four-hour ride, you will get to see breathtaking scenery and maybe, just maybe, some wild animals.
Buckaroo
Ride through the herd. This is 9 Finger Ranch's most popular short ride: get a taste of the cowboy life with Buckaroo. This two-hour tour will include a visit of the cattle herd. Ask away if you have questions about raising beef cattle!
About the horses
9 Finger Ranch has around 11 guest horses at the moment. Most are purebred Tennessee Walking Horses and are born, grown up, and trained on the ranch.
If you want to get to know them in advance, they published their horses’ profiles on their social media accounts.
Included excursions
Please note that the rides are generally at a walking pace. For 9 Finger Ranch, trail riding is about enjoying the beautiful nature while having a great time connecting with people and horses - it is not about speed and adventure. The horses are well trained for what they want them to be - being reliable companions for trail rides - please do not expect fancy broke Western show horses.
Instructors
Tom
Thomas loves his Tennessee walking horses and riding in the park. He has combined that love and is now sharing it with you as a certified licensed guide for the Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba. From rides on the ranch to camping in the park, he will be with you all the way and share his wealth of knowledge of the park with you as well as stories from the last decades of guiding rides. Most of the rides in your package will be with Tom!
Jana
Starting as a guest herself, Jana has worked with us for a few years by now - as Tom always says, we can't get rid of her anymore! She is a licensed guide for Riding Mountain National Park, leads rides on the ranch property, and works with our young horses. Not to forget, she’s organizing rides and horses (and Tom ;-) ) in the background. Additionally, she is responsible for our website and social media activities - so, don't wonder if Jana takes pictures of everything and everyone!
