Program

Below is the itinerary. While all tours and visits will be included in this trip, Dutch Tours can change the dates for the specific visits due to the weather and availability of tickets. They might also substitute certain specific visits if they think they add more value to your trip.

Daily itinerary

Day 1: Welcome

Pick-up transfers from Amsterdam Airport in the morning. Settle in, meet your hosts. You will have a welcome dinner at the “Hollandsche Manege”, the oldest riding school in the country, in a beautiful building from the mid-19th century, in the middle of town. If you are early, explore Amsterdam and hop on a canal cruise for a first taste of the historic center. Overnight in Zaandam.

Day 2: Riding and windmills (with clogs and cheese)

Head out for a scenic morning ride through the local forests and dunes (two or three groups, depending on the number of riders). Lunch at a traditional Dutch farmhouse featuring regional specialties like Pancakes and Kroketten. After lunch, you visit the famous windmills of the Zaanse Schans. Overnight in Zaandam.

Day 3: Texel Island

This day is a full-day excursion to Texel Island, as it is fun for everyone. You will ride in the forest, dunes, and even on the beach for the very experienced. The rest of the day is filled with small medieval villages, beaches, light house, seal watching, and some World War II history. The day is flexible. The Waddensea is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: vast mudflats where millions of shore birds rest on their trek. Seal watching is one of the highlights of this day. You leave early in the morning and can have dinner on the island. You return to Amsterdam after dinner. Overnight in Zaandam.

Day 4: Ride and visit a stud farm

You will ride in the Veluwe forest: deep dark woods and open heather moors. Home to wild boar, red deer, roe deer, and wolves. You spend the afternoon at one of the top KWPN breeding farms: meet the top sires of show jumping and dressage. Your host will tell you about stallion selection, breeding, and training warmbloods in the Netherlands. You will attend a clinic or demonstration with the top horses in the country. Overnight in Veluwe.

Day 5: Military Boekelo XC day

Today is XC day at the world-famous military Boekelo. You have an all-day ticket, so dress up in your best country attire and watch the pros take on the most difficult fences at this four-star event. This huge event has plenty of shops and food trucks at its country fair. You will have dinner in a local pub before you tuck in for the last night. Overnight in Veluwe.

Day 6: Time to say goodbye

It is time to say goodbye. After breakfast, they arrange for transit to the airport or welcome you to extend your stay.

About the tour

This six-day, five-night tour is perfect for all equestrian enthusiasts: AA’s and happy hackers alike. If you are comfortable in all three gaits on the three trails in an English saddle, enjoy watching cross-country eventing as well as shopping, and are keen to learn a bit more about the horse industry in Europe, this is the perfect short escape for you. A getaway with your barn family or a special mother - daughter trip. If you want to join in all the fun, but are not interested in riding, this vacation is ideal too. They drive a minivan with eight passenger seats.

Riding

All riders are required to send very accurate info on their recent riding experience. The stable will determine which group they will join and at what pace the ride will be. Safety is key. Riders must be under 85 kilograms or 188 pounds to join. The stables will have the opportunity to test the riding skills before heading out on the trails. Dutch Tours will discuss with every rider before the trip so that they can match them with the horses. Riders must be able to walk, trot, and canter comfortably in English tack and have extensive recent experience in trail riding in all three paces. Please bring your own helmet, boots, and breeches.

The tour will take place in the Netherlands.
