During this holiday, the included package is for double occupancy. For the Ultimate Cowboy Adventure, there are no other guests at the ranch so the accommodation is by all units in the retreat, depending on who books: couple, family, or single.

Buffalo Lodge

Built in 1924, this mountain cabin offers laidback and relaxed country-style luxury. Old-fashioned charm and the rustic flavor of frontier living all superbly blended with casual elegance. Restoration followed traditional construction techniques. On the first floor sits the bedroom, rustic bathroom with a two-meter long soaking tub, living room, balcony overlooking the Square, private terrace with mountain views, and kitchen.

On the second floor, the lodge is appointed with a luxury suite that includes a sitting area and a separate bathroom. Designed to be reminiscent of Scandinavian wooden houses, its minimalistic clean lines will appeal to those seeking finer things in life. The lodge can accommodate up to eight people. Self-catering and personal chef services are available in the lodge.

Casitas

Casita Stella and Luna represent the finest in the luxury outback living. In shape, they are reminiscent of African mud huts to evoke the times of great expeditions. Inside, finely appointed with handwoven middle-eastern wool rugs, handmade furniture, extra-large duvets (to ensure you stay snug and warm at night), fine linens, embroidered ultra-fluffy towels, and plush robes, slippers, hairdryer, and natural amenities (shampoo, lotion, conditioner, cotton balls, q-tips).

Each of them consists of a master bedroom, working and reading area with cast iron wood stove for cozying up in front with a good book on a chilly evening. In building Stella and Luna, the ranch took great care and consideration for the people with special physical needs. Therefore, both exterior and interior are designed on a single level which enables unobstructed movement. With private gardens outside and a swimming pool and a Japanese hot tub only meters away, you can consider them a private retreat in their own right.

En-suite Rooms

Four en-suite rooms will give you maximum comfort with their distinctively arranged interior in which every piece of furniture tells its own story. Two double rooms (Bear Cave, Sweet Grass) and two single rooms (Ponderosa, Wrangler) will cradle you with their carefully appointed furniture, featherbeds, massage showers, uncluttered simplicity, and above all, nurturing silence as a result of natural, sheep’s wool insulation that is sourced from sheepherders in the valley.

Wood for building doors, windows, and furniture was sourced at the ranch as part of the sustainable forestry program and it was built in collaboration with a local carpenter. This way, local people benefit from your stay in these small but beautiful dwellings. They come with private porches where you can wash down trail dust and enjoy a cold beer while watching evening settle over the valley.

Lakota Tipi

On the property, there are genuine American Indian tipis made by Nomadics Tipi in North America that made tipis for Kevin Costner’s movie “Dances With Wolves”. Being inside a tipi is living a step closer to nature. During the day, a tipi has a mellow even illumination that has never been equaled in a house. When it rains, it is cozy and dry inside while the drumming of the raindrops overhead soothes the soul.

At night, especially during the full moon, shadows of surrounding trees are painted on the cover of the wall and with clear skies, stars shine down between the poles. Guests staying in tipis have their own detached private bathrooms conveniently located within meters from the tipi. Bathrooms are fully equipped with hot-water showers, toilets, bathrobes, slippers, and toiletries.

As for the accommodation on the mountain, it is in the safari tents (3x3 meters, Height: 2.2 meters), which are called River Tents: These tents are equipped with two single beds. The accommodation is at the ranch for the first two nights, then three nights in a tent on the mountain, then again on the last night, at the ranch. It is possible to request single accommodation in tents. Fee applies.

River Tents

The newest addition to the distinctive array of guest ranch accommodations includes River Tents, safari tents on the river bank. They feature twin bed accommodation and enough room under the beds for your luggage, top-grade cot beds dressed with the finest linens, amenities, private baths, and front porch rocking chairs to relax after a day in the saddle.

Bathrooms are detached and are 50 yards away. Each bathroom is fully equipped with hot water showers, washbasins, toilet, and a full array of toiletries, including plush bathrobes and slippers to keep you cozy. Linden calls this a bush experience with a dash of luxury. Another name for it is glamping; whichever way you call it, the ranch is confident you will have a deep rest and real connection with nature.

Accommodation and Facilities

Linden Tree Retreat & Ranch is an ideal place for adventurous travelers looking for something completely different, laidback environment with an authentic, intimate ambiance, truly your home away from home. In this gorgeous wilderness setting, only a select few guests are welcomed at a time.

Accommodations feature the best of ranch living with finely-appointed amenities to help guests relax after a day of horse riding and other activities. Different types of accommodation facilities offered at the ranch include rooms, suites, chalets, lodges, river tents, and Native American tipis.

They all feature beds dressed with soft linens, private baths (river tents have detached bathrooms), porches, and mountain views. With a studio hall, saloon, the Square, hot tub, swimming pool, archery range, a horse-riding arena, tack room, two creeks, and a river, there’s plenty of indoor and outdoor space for guests to spread out comfortably. Linden designs facilities for fun and relaxation in order to create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere and allow you to have an unforgettable vacation.

  • Unique Accommodation

If you want to be as close to nature as you can and still have full comfort of a room? Choose between Lakota Tipi or River Tents.

  • Appointed Luxury

You may be in the wilderness but Linden Tree will still pamper you, a full range of amenities is available to you.

  • Spirit of the Adventure

Being one with the horse, breathing the scented mountain air, and enjoying incredible vistas are guaranteed; getting addicted to it, most likely.

Facilities

  • Saloon

Whether you want to join the family-style dinner around a big table or you are looking for a quiet corner, you are in for a culinary treat. From pre-dawn until long into the night, the Saloon (a former horse barn), together with an adjoining Square, is a hub of gentle and cheerful activity.

It starts around 6 a.m. when the breakfast crew comes for their morning shift and sets a pot of cowboy coffee atop antique cast iron stove affectionately called "Dora". It continues throughout the day with the first class breakfast, lunch, and dinners staged al fresco in the Square, whenever possible.

  • Hot Tub

Soak yourself in a traditional Japanese ofuro wooden tub heated by a woodstove, helping the ranch to adhere to its commitment to a low carbon footprint. This ancient technique of immersion in hot water takes away tensions and stress, soothes muscle pains and stimulates blood circulation.

Feel for yourself why soaking tub has been used by the different cultures for centuries to alleviate both physical and spiritual maladies. During evening, enjoy stargazing from warm water with a glass of bubbly champagne or single malt scotch from the reserve list.

  • Swimming Pool

Freshen up after the morning horseback ride or chill out on a lounge chair and read your favorite book in the afternoon; the hangout spot for children and grown-ups alike. Kids love playing pool games like volleyball or water handball. During high season, Linden Tree organizes a pool cocktail party once a week.

  • Riding Arena

The outdoor riding arena is adjacent to the barn. This is where riding classes, horsemanship lectures, and demonstrations are held. Linden Tree trains and exercises horses on the soft grass of the arena and cowboy games are also organized here.

  • Equipond

Equipond is a specially designed training ground for horses to help develop their strength, ensure the fastest rehabilitation possible, and enable horses to overcome a fear of water. It is great for riders too, it shows how the horse will behave near the water and helps you learn how to calm the horse in the water.

  • Studio Hall

Honey-hued wood-paneled walls embrace the great Studio room with rock encased wood stove, library, and selection of fine Japanese artifacts. This space serves as a yoga studio, as well as a cinema, workshop space, library, and meeting hall.

  • The Square

The Square is a major meeting point at the ranch. On one side sits the reception office, across from it is the Saloon from where gentle notes of country music keep coming from. On the northern side is the kitchen, where the delicious meals are prepared. Southside offers views of horse pastures. This is where dances are held, where you grab a beer after a horseback ride or where you come to take a refreshing lunch before another dip in a swimming pool.

  • The Barn

A favorite hangout spot for wranglers and guests alike, all horse buzz happens here: feeding, grooming, saddling, introductory lessons, etc. This is where the tack room and the activity room are located. You are bound to find a bunch of kids here, helping out wranglers get horses ready from sun-up to sun-down.

  • Reception

Linden staff is knowledgeable about the area and always ready to help with whatever your needs are: arranging transportation, organizing an activity, or sharing Linden stories, as well as hearing yours from your latest horseback ride or Jeep drive you took. Your vacation with Linden Tree is about making memories, their job is to make sure those moments happen.

What is the difference between the ranch and a dude ranch vacation?

Linden Tree Retreat & Ranch is inspired by dude ranch vacations that allowed people to experience an authentic cowboy life in the West. However, instead of simply offering opportunities typical of dude ranches in American West, they strive to offer an authentic view of both historic and modern pursuits while providing luxury travel amenities, world-class cuisine, a full service, and private and nature conservation-driven adventures. At Linden Tree you are not a spectator, you are actively participating in nature conservation, community development and cultural exchanges.

All-inclusive Ranch

The all-inclusive ranch ensures that visits to Linden Tree Retreat & Ranch are memorable for their adventures and amenities, not logistical challenges. As Europe’s only DK Eyewitness Travel Luxury Ranch, the property truly stands apart from other luxury resorts. The idea of a guest ranch is that you are a guest, rather than a lodger, visiting a home away from home and taking part in the same adventures and traditions as if you owned it.

It is Linden Tree's pleasure to offer all gourmet meals, a robust outdoor activities program, experienced staff, and expert guides, and top-of-the-the-line gear based on the idea that the mountain will become your playground for the length of your stay.

Program

Come and ride in pristine nature, cross the mountain on a horseback and indulge in a tasty cuisine featured in a Michelin guide. Experience frontier life in this heart-changing adventure. You will come as a city-slicker and leave as a true and tried cowboy and cowgirl. Once a year, selected few guests have the privilege of participating in an expedition deep into the mountain and across Lika plain on a journey that can best be described through the words of those who have taken it before “a trip of a lifetime” or “best vacation ever”!

After you spend a week on the mountain listening to the sound of silence and deepening understanding of yourself and your place in this world, you will never look at life with the same eyes. Evenings around campfire and stories shared, challenges of daily rides and unexpected situations ask of riders to bring their best. In its own way, this adventure for many who have taken it represented a rite of passage to their more authentic self.

Day 1

Arrival in the afternoon. Explore the Ranch and meet the horses.

Day 2

After breakfast, you will participate in a natural horsemanship session led by Linden Tree founder, Bruce Yerkovich. His signature style of horsemanship is based on what he calls “natural human” and genetic memory. By allowing yourself to be authentic, you will experience fellowship with a horse unlike ever before. After lunch, tack the horses and go on a trail ride for a couple of hours to put into practice what you learned in the morning and to make sure you are ready for the adventure.

Day 3

After breakfast, set out for your first day-ride. The goal for this day is to reach a high mountain plateau where Linden crew has set up your base camp. On the way, cross hidden springs and watercourses. This is an intensive ride, covering some rough terrain, often going through unmarked territory, a real adventure for real cowboys and cowgirls!

Accommodation will be in safari-style tents on comfy beds and proper matrasses and duvets. No roughing it here! And hot showers inside an Indian tipi are all the rave with guests.

Day 4

Good cowboy breakfast will be served in the morning. On this day, transverse an old Roman road that leads to the seaside of the mountain. Stop for a rest and lunch break at the Ranger’s station, before heading back to the base camp.

Day 5

Ride on this day takes you over the mountain to a valley where several movies were made and is a popular brown bear habitat, so there is a high probability of spotting these majestic animals on this day. Eat lunch out of the saddlebags and in the afternoon, circle back to the base camp, riding on a dirt road; a favorite place to try some galloping.

Day 6

Today is the return to the ranch using high altitude switchbacks, popular during the Middle Ages with outlaws and renegades. Lunch out of the saddlebags near the animal watering hole, so very likely, you will run into forest critters there. In the evening, a feast will await you at the ranch, after which, a soak in a hot tub will feel like a million dollars!

Day 7

Today is the day of departure after breakfast or you can extend your stay for more relaxation, rejuvenation, or other activities the ranch has to offer.

Age and Weight Restrictions

The minimum age is 13 years, anyone under 18 should be a regular and enthusiastic rider, have a keen sense of adventure and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Linden Tree have had people in their 70s on trips, but again, they were fit, in good health, and rode regularly prior to their holiday.

You are asked to judge yourself (and your children) honestly in this regard, as Linden Tree will take your word for it and plan the trip accordingly. It is important that you feel fit and healthy before going on the trail. You are traveling in the wilderness, where medical services (beyond first aid) are not readily available. The maximum weight for riders is 100 kilograms (220 US pounds). Exceptions may be made for very experienced/athletic riders. No prior riding experience is needed.

Linden Tree is committed to exist in Velebit Mountain in an entirely sensitive and environmentally sustainable manner. Food

Every morning, as a wisp of smoke escapes through the chimney, the aroma of freshly brewed oriental coffee greets guests to the dining room. Inside, country charm meets eco-friendly chic where locally-made wooden tables and hand-hewn beams add to the ambiance. Linden Tree believes your vacation at the ranch is more than just a vacation, it is a culinary getaway of the high order.

Linden Tree food has been called “soul food” and designated as “cooked with love.” It is best described as a Croatian mosaic of world flavors, a sensational fusion of Mediterranean dishes plated with an international flair. Everything served is prepared fresh from scratch, the same day in the open country kitchen, using the very best ingredients.

Eating food grown on-site or foraged from the nearby meadows and forest is at the heart of every Linden Tree menu. Respect for the sustainable production, harvest, and preparation of these ingredients is always at the forefront of their minds. Dining in one of the accommodation facilities, en-suite and alfresco dining in the meadow, or on a private balcony, is a special treat for couples taking romantic holidays, for anniversary celebrations, and for honeymoon vacations.

Bio-dynamic and organic

Ingredients that Linden Tree sources hold the principles of bio-dynamic and organic farming methods. Not all are certified, however, Linden Tree makes sure they know their suppliers; after all, they are neighbors and family members. And then there is the highly praised mare’s milk, few drops of that painstakingly drawn elixir has been known for ages to cleanse and rejuvenate the body.

Fresh and local

Vegetable and herb gardens on the property provide fresh greens, vegetables, carrots, onions, edible flowers, and garnishes helping reduce the carbon footprint. Dishes like the summer salad of baby greens, semi-dried tomato pears, roasted beets, and mixed herbs are 100% sourced from the garden.

From nature

Linden Tree enriches your dining experience with leaves, plants, mushrooms, and berries foraged from the woods. In fact, foraging has become a daily routine for the chef and his sous-chefs. It’s their goal to have something foraged on your plate at every meal. In this way, they bring nature into the dining room.

Coffee and tea

The signature oriental coffee is brewed from the finest Arabica beans specially selected by the Master Chef, Megi, who grew up in old Sarajevo where secrets of preparing coffee are passed down from generation to generation. Her passion for nature is evident in herbs she picks on the mountain for Linden tea mixtures and there is inevitable cowboy coffee, made daily on the trusty Dora, a cast-iron woodstove.

From the wild

River and sea-caught fish and wild venison from the forests nearby are ranch specialties. The dairy, poultry, and beef all come from community-based cooperatives and are 100% organic and free-range. Once a week, Linden Tree organizes trips to visit these local farms. The little guests accompany the sous-chef every morning to a neighbor’s chicken coop to bring fresh breakfast eggs.

The bread

The bread is baked from three types of locally grown grains (rye, barley, wheat) and slowly fermented. It is baked inside a big wood-fired bread oven, as a part of community collaboration. Suitable even for gluten sensitive people, due to antique grain varieties.

The beer

Linden Tree produces two types of beer, both brewed in lager style with aromatic hops. One is called "Moustache Beer" and the other one aims to please a cowgirl in you and is affectionately called "Beer for Women".

Special needs

It is helpful for Linden Tree to know in advance of any restrictions, allergies, or special medical conditions so that they can best serve you. The modern natural cuisine favors reduction sauces over cream-based, vegetable-based broths over meat stock, organic ingredients over conventional, and a light healthy (and incredibly delicious) style of cooking.

Things to do (optional)

Cinema

Once a week, Linden Tree shows cowboy movies in their Cinema. You will be able to compare your riding skills with those of the famous movie stars and be inspired to learn a new trick or two with your horse.

Dance

The dancefloor gives you the freedom and space to show your cowboy spirit and learn new moves from your dance partners through dancing on real cowboy music. It is fun, playful, relaxing, and connecting. Laughter, song, and togetherness are united on the floor where a good party is guaranteed for guests of all ages.

Storytelling

Once a week, Linden Tree assembles in a circle to discuss visions, dreams and wishes in life, read cowboy poems, or sing. Everyone takes turns sharing stories, while others in the circle listen respectfully. Each participant has the opportunity to hold the talking stick and share.

Campfire

During summer nights around campfire, live music and singing happens. From country evergreens to jazz standards and popular numbers, there is going to be your favorite song you can sing along.

Winnetou trail

Jeep is another way to discover Velebit Mountain. Trips are guided and take you to some of the deepest corners of the mountain where wild animals roam free; the trip is a combination of off-roading and hiking. Simple but tasty lunch is prepared and served by rangers at Veliki Alan mountain hut.

Canoe expedition

Glide along in a canoe on Lika River canyon. Enjoy the exercise when the wind is down and the river is still. Get your heart rate up while basking in the sunshine and splashing a paddle in the cool water. Depending on the water level, up to four prehistoric dams will have to be negotiated by taking your canoe on your shoulders while crossing a pile of ancient rocks. Keep your eye out for wildlife while paddling!

Cowboy games

Great fun for company get-togethers or groups of friends and families with children. Variety of fun and safe games to make you laugh and smile and get a good work out. Sack runs, tug-of-war, snap-the-apple, wood chopping, wagon-in-a-river, and spoon run are few of the games played as a part of this favorite activity for guests of all ages.

Bear watching

Among rich fauna of Velebit Mountain, the bear is one that is hard to spot. These furry giants, hiding during the day, crawl out at night to feed mostly on berries and bugs. So join Linden Tree and stay alert, for in tranquility of the dark, suddenly, a rustle can be heard. This activity is highly seasonal and dependent on bear migration and activity. It can only be arranged on the same day to ensure the maximum possible chance of spotting the animals.

Hiking

The forest around the ranch has an abundance of logging hiking trails that are a hiker’s paradise. The hiking trails are different and adapted both to the experienced and recreational hikers. It is even possible to walk all the way to the coast by a shortcut over the mountain; it makes for a great, multi-day camping trip.

Close to the ranch are caves to visit, peaks to climb, rivers to cross, and spacious meadows to rest in. The possibilities are endless and the goal is to continue clearing and connecting trails in order to make them multi-purpose and increase the options for your active stay at the ranch.

Cycling

Ride a bike to the birthplace museum of Nikola Tesla (20 kilometer/13 miles) to Smiljan or set out on a journey and find for yourself, the hidden wonders of the valley, soft meadows bursting with vegetation, peaceful shady grooves as shelters from the summer sun, ruins of forsaken hamlets telling stories of past times. Linden Tree offers crossroad bikes for rental to all guests to discover trails surrounding the ranch.

Archery

The ranch provides an accessible and exciting opportunity to learn archery or hone your bow skills. The guides provide extensive safety and technique instruction with less demanding longbows. Guests start by practicing on traditional bulls-eye targets while receiving personalized instruction.

Once you’re hitting the mark, move through the secluded hillside range where you’ll find an exciting archery course that will put your skills to the test. A selection of near-to-life-sized foam cutout animals is situated along a short, easy hiking trail. Walking the trail allows you to shoot at different angles and target positions to recreate an authentic wilderness bow-hunting experience.

Geocaching

Linden Tree Retreat & Ranch geocaching combines western heritage for treasure hunting with modern-day technology. Using GPS devices and coordinates, individual guests and groups locate hidden boxes on thousands of acres of the beautiful Velebit Mountain. Adults and families choose between intermediate or expert levels, allowing them to customize their search by ability and time constraints.

Children search for boxes while learning about nature, history, geography, and topography. “Hiking with a purpose” is a great way to become acquainted with this corner of the European wilderness. Caches can be customized for private events like corporate retreats or family reunions. The clues lead guests toward tailored secret messages or a grand prize.

Road trips

You have an opportunity to explore the rich and diverse region that is only a one to two-hour drive from the ranch. Here is a sample itinerary to the three world-famous destinations.

  • Plitvice Lakes is Croatia’s most famous national park. It harbors a magnificent collection of waterfalls, lakes, forest, and a diversity of animal life. The lakes are renowned for their distinctive colors, ranging from azure to green, grey, or blue.
  • Alfred Hitchcock said that Zadar has the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Zadar’s old town is a place that holds 3,000 years of rich history. A place where you can enjoy museums, churches, squares, art galleries, and the old city itself.
  • Nikola Tesla's birthplace is a mere bike ride from the ranch. Tesla was practicing yoga, meditation, visualization, and was finding inspiration for his work in the Velebit Mountain. The museum with Tesla’s patents and educational tour are well worth the admittance ticket.

Swimming

Dive into the clear blue waters of the Adriatic Sea and refresh yourself in a new way. On a bicycle, you can go to Lika River or Kruscica lake, located 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the ranch. In one day, you can visit a number of famous touristic destinations together with different and unique swimming locations where you can get your fill of water dipping and refreshment in the unique sea expanse.

Wellness

Have you ever heard of Vitamin N? It cannot be synthesized in labs yet it is vital for people to have a meaningful and balanced life. N stands for nature! Nature helps boost the immune system, reduces stress and blood pressure, elevates focus and mood, accelerates healing, and improves your sleep/wake balance.

By its very definition, wellness is the achievement a balance of the mind, spirit, and body that results in overall well-being. Forest bathing (inhaling beneficial phytoncides), active and passive meditation in forests, especially old-growth forests, unplugging (from technology) by choice, sleeping outdoors (like in the tipis or river tents), nourishing your body with natural-sourced and organic foods, massaging your body, challenging your body, thrilling your psyche, immersing yourself in a demonstrably remote and authentically wild environment, childlike play, and doing nothing at all are all prescriptions for improved wellness.

At Linden Tree, all of that comes naturally, the grounds are designed as a physical and spiritual sanctuary offering yoga, wellness, and restorative treatments for the body and soul. A secluded compound with an outdoor treatment room, yoga room, Siberian cedar hot tub, swimming pool, and tranquil outdoor lounge spaces fosters healing and wellness processes inside your body.

Throughout the season, Linden Tree hosts various practitioners and professionals who offer their wellness services to guests, ranging from individual to group seasons: yoga, massage, acupuncture, acupressure, aromatherapy, and fitness.

  • Aromatherapy

Using essential oils and gently rubbing them in is proven to relax the body and mind.

  • Japanese Ofuro Hot Tub

This ancient technique of immersion in hot water takes away tensions and stress, soothes muscle pains, and stimulates blood circulation.

  • Massage

Throughout the season, Linden Tree brings visiting massaging professionals who practice different techniques, some are more sports-oriented, some work on releasing energetic blocks.

  • Yoga

Visiting teachers bring variety in the form of different yoga practices.

  • Meditation

Whether in the Studio Hall or outdoors, meditation is at home at Linden Tree.

  • Swimming pool

Refreshing benefits of pure mountain spring water in the swimming pool are undeniable.
