If you want to live close to nature, have animals, like moose, outside your window, and experience the silence, this is the place for you. Ofelas has two houses for rent at the horse farm, one with three bedrooms, a common kitchen, and two bathrooms (for up to six people). They also have another house to rent at the farm for up to four people with one shared bathroom. There is also a sauna at the river bank. You can, on your own, take a walk in the forest. You can get to Kiruna by bus from Kiruna during the summertime.

Program

You will ride Icelandic horses two days out based on Nikkaluokta and the farm in Puoltsa in the valley and up in the mountains with a breathtaking view of Kebnekaise. You ride both on paths, small roads, and in pathless terrain so you can vary the tempo of the riding. You stop during the tours to cook lunch over an open fire. You stay in a house on the horse farm in Puoltsa and eat local specialties. You arrive at the farm in Puoltsa in the morning on the first day and then you will prepare the horses and take a day trip where you stop to eat lunch.

You ride up on the bare mountain where you have a fantastic view over the river and the mountains. When you come back, you have a dinner of local specialties. The night is spent in a double room in a house on the farm. On the next day after breakfast, you go to Nikkaluokta by car for another great day of riding. Also, on this day, you eat lunch out but come back a little earlier so you have time for the trip home.

This tour is suitable for both experienced and less experienced riders. The Icelandic horse is certainly strong, but not so large, so the maximum weight of the rider is 90 kilograms and the minimum age is 12. You can come to Nikkaluokta or Puoltsa by bus or car. Sometimes, you have this tour in Ratekjokk, a place you have in a roadless area and Ofelas Islandshästar takes you there by car and boat.

Food

All meals from lunch on the first day to lunch on the last day are included in the price. Reindeer and moose meat is an important ingredient in Sámi cuisine, usually smoked to last longer when you are out in the mountains for many weeks. Other local specialties in this area are fish from the river or mountain lakes. Berries and herbs are also important ingredients, like cloudberries, blueberries, lingonberries, Angelica, meadowsweet, etc.

Ofelas Islandshästar provides any special diet if you require it, like no lactose, gluten-free, or vegetarian, just remember to inform them in advance. Traditional food in Sámi is meat and fish supplemented with herbs and berries. Salt and flour were bought so you could bake bread. Fish and meat were eaten either fresh, salted, smoked, dried, or conserved in a different way. The Sami cuisine still looks the same but with new dishes and outside influences.

Reindeer and moose meat, Arctic char, Whitefish, cloudberries, blueberries, lingonberries, Angelica, and Mountain Sorrel are common in Sami cuisine. Coffee cheese was made from reindeer milk and, later, also from goat and cow milk. Lots of new exciting things are happening with the development of Sami cooking today.
