Daily itinerary
Day 1 - Monday (4 hours ride)
You will ride for an hour through fields where oats are planted, continue along a narrow path next to the sound stream between the forest, arrive at the JD cabin where you will eat exquisite dishes of typical Mexican food, then continue through a majestic forest of fir trees, and cross through the spring and trout farm to the “Bello Cienega Alta” valley, 3000 meters above sea level. You will continue and descend through a long gap called “La Piedra el Rincón”, returning through very beautiful places, extraordinary for taking photos, to the place where you depart to go and rest in Las Margaritas.
Day 2 - Tuesday (6 hours ride)
You will begin to experience a day of adventure like no other. You will take the road and go to the detour that will take you into the forest and “San Pablo” hill, where nature will accompany you among paths full of vegetation. Then you will go up and reach the impressive “Cigueñal” Valley, where you can see and assimilate its beauty and tranquility. You will stay for an hour and have your comforting picnic lunch. You will continue climbing a winding road that is a little demanding for your horses, to get there and enjoy the journey through a ravine full of bushes and trees. You will arrive at the “Espejo La Ermita” plain, enjoying its splendor, and then return to the starting point and head to Las Margaritas.
Day 3 - Wednesday (6 hours ride)
This day, the ride presents you with a great opportunity for your senses to be filled with enthusiasm to enhance the experience of the previous days. You will go by car to the plain of “Las Navajas”, 3470 meters above sea level. Nature will welcome you with an impressive landscape with vegetation primarily of ocote trees (high altitude conifers). You will pass nearby a ranch called “La Paloma” and you will ride through a gap that will take you to the great valley of “El Paso del Oso”.
Later you will cross the “Las Navajas” valley and enter the forest that will take you to the plain of “Doña Gregoria” and then arrive at one of the most beautiful and spectacular places, “Los Ajolotes” dam, where you will have your picnic lunch. You will take the return road full of adventure and beauty, where you will pass through streams and dams to reach the junction of the “Iturbide” dam, where the transportation will take you back to Las Margaritas.
Day 4 - Thursday (6 hours ride)
Today you will visit the largest dam in the region of the “Cumbres de Sierra Nevada” national park. This place is immensely large and spectacular. You will ride and gallop through the valley of “La Ermita” and have a picnic lunch in the area of ”El Puerto”. You will take the return path through ravines, streams, and beautiful forests to reach the starting point.
Day 5 - Friday (4 hours ride)
This day will be majestic, with ups and downs, cliffs and ravines in the forest. You will tour the “El Conejo” and “La Joya” valley with spectacular and unforgettable views. You will also visit “Los Miradores,” where the view is breathtaking. Do not forget your camera. Then you will return to Las Margaritas and have a farewell lunch.
About the holiday
A driver will pick you up by 10:00 a.m. on Monday at the Holiday Inn hotel in Santa Fe, Mexico City. You will drive for one hour to Rancho Las Margaritas. You will be driven back to the Holiday Inn hotel in Santa Fe, Mexico City, leaving at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Santa Fe is a high-class business neighborhood in Mexico City; it is a 45-minute drive from the Mexico City International Airport. There are many fine restaurants and hotels, as well as world-class hospitals. Rancho Las Margaritas has an agreement with the Holiday Inn hotel if you wish to stay there. As you arrive at Rancho Las Margarita, you will be weighed and presented with the horses so you can ride a couple of them to see which one suits you best.
You will enjoy a local lunch and will ride for two hours. A delicious dinner will be served by 6:00 p.m. Campfire, music, and drinks. You will start the day on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with a hearty local breakfast at 8:30 in the morning. Saddled up and riding by 10:00, you will ride for about three hours and then enjoy a delicious lunch deep in the mountains by one in the evening. You will ride for around two more hours and return to Las Margaritas for evening drinks. A delicious dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. and a campfire with Mexican music will be started for all to enjoy and chat. On Friday, a van will drive you back to the Holiday Inn hotel in Santa Fe, Mexico City. It will leave at 4:00 p.m. in order to be there by 5:00 p.m.
Expert local horsemen will guide you on daily rides through safe and challenging trails, beautiful, lush forests, high mountains, enchanting valleys, creeks, and deep ravines. They are friendly and customer-oriented local riders, born and raised in San Miguel Tecpán, and they have been working in Rancho Las Margaritas for several years. They are all highly skilled horsemen and are first aid certified by the Mexican Red Cross.
You will always be assisted by a bilingual staff member. You will experience daily five to six-hour, breathtaking rides that you will never forget. Riding in groups of not more than eight horses, this is the most intimate way of experiencing the real, deep Mexican countryside. You must be an intermediate to advanced skill rider for the kind of trail you ride on. There are two training rings and more than 30 stables.
Horses
Over 20 beautiful, obedient, and sure-footed quarter horses that master the local trails. Horses are usually ridden on Mexican Charro or Western-style saddles. They have some English and Aussie saddles as well. The tack is finely cared for and in perfect condition.
Instructors
Norberto Romero
Norberto was born and raised in San Miguel Tecpan. His father was in charge of Rancho Las Margaritas for many years, and Norberto started working with horses when he turned 18. His horsemanship and commitment, as well as his improvising capacity, have made him an outstanding and extremely reliable coworker. He is certified as a Horse Handler by the Mexican Quarter Horse Breeders Association (AMCM), as well as in First Aid and Wilderness Critical Survival.
Victor Aguilar
Well known throughout the region for his horsemanship, Victor is the ideal guide; he knows every path, trail, creek, and stone as well as all the locals you might find while riding. He knows the horses perfectly, and they all love him. Victor is a certified first aid fast responder and wilderness critical survival. He is kind, committed, and resourceful. Victor is the guy you want by your side when the going gets tough.
Location
The holiday will take place in San Miguel Tecpan, State of Mexico, Mexico. Rancho Las Margaritas is located in San Miguel Tecpán, deep in the Sierra Mountains of central Mexico. It can be easily accessed by a one-hour drive from Mexico City. The area is beautiful and very safe. The region is a National Park (Parque Nacional Cumbres Sierra Nevada) and has thousands of acres of pine forests, high hills, lush valleys, deep gorges, and pristine creeks. The altitude begins at 2830 meters above sea level. The village is characterized by its cobbled streets, beautiful colonial church, and quaint town square. The trails are second to none.
