If you only have a few days or are on a road trip through South Africa, Kei Mouth and the little seaside village is a perfect stopover. You get to explore the stunning Wild Coast on lovely horses and enjoy relaxed hospitality with a hearty evening dinner and breakfast, all brought together with lots of fabulous horse riding.
The program offers a lovely afternoon ride, then a choice of full-day rides with lunch en route, and a final clifftop ride; making this a super getaway.
Sample daily schedule
Includes two nights in Kei Mouth Guest Lodge, one afternoon ride, one full day ride (Yellow Woods or waterfalls or a pub lunch ride), and one morning ride.
Day 1
- Arrive around lunchtime and go up to the horse yard at 2:30 p.m.
- Your ride this afternoon takes you to the Great Kei River and is a lovely hour-and-a-half loop to get to know your horse.
- Dinner and overnight at Kei Mouth Guest Lodge.
Day 2
- Your choice of options depends on your riding ability and where you feel like exploring: Yellow Wood ride with pizza lunch in the forest / Waterfall picnic ride with a ferry crossing over the Kei River / Full day pub lunch ride to either Seagulls or Trennerys Hotels
- Dinner and overnight at Kei Mouth Guest Lodge
Day 3
- After a lovely breakfast, you will meet again at the horses for 9:30 a.m. and then head to Morgan Bay and a stunning clifftop ride with a final canter down the Morgan Bay beach.
- Depart at your leisure.

Fitness
This is a horse riding holiday and guests should be comfortable in walk, trot, and canter for up to 3 or 4 hours in the saddle at a time. They have a lovely selection of horses that suit a wide range of riding abilities from the novice level up. Riding a horse does require a degree of natural fitness and balance. The weight limit is 95 kilograms, if you are over this weight but are a good rider they have a couple of horses that can accommodate you!
Riding ability (required upon booking)
- Beginner rider: Someone who is comfortable in the saddle and can stay on a reliable well school horse. They can post to the trot (go up and down) and may have cantered a few times. Beginners generally ride once or twice a year on holiday with their partner!
- Novire rider: Someone who is comfortable in the saddle and enjoys a reliable well-schooled horse. They generally ride at a riding school once or twice a month, or like to ride a friend’s horse on the farm. They can post to trot comfortably and enjoy a nice controlled canter.
- Intermediate rider: Someone who rides regularly and enjoys a forward going well-schooled horse. They may or may not be a little nervous for the first little bit while they get to know their horse. They can control their horse independently and are confidently trotting in controlled canters.
- Advanced rider: Someone who is comfortable on most horses in most situations. They ride regularly and may or may not have their own horse. They have a good seat and gentle hands. They can ride in light seats and can hold a strong horse in a fast canter.
