Kei Mouth Guest Lodge offers comfortable accommodation in the heart of the seaside village of Kei Mouth on the Wild Coast of South Africa. The house is situated in a tranquil street, just off the main road, central to most amenities, and within walking distance to the supermarket, pubs, restaurants, the beach, the Kei River, and the ferry crossing.
They have three en suite bedrooms: The Stone Room, The Garden Room, and The Coral Room. There is also a 2 bedroom flat upstairs. The rooms are serviced daily. Each room has its own private patio; free Wi-Fi is provided.
The guest house is 2.5km from the horse paddocks, and 10 minute walk to the beach.
Program
Kei River Trail guests will explore the local area of Kei Mouth and Morgan Bay, and more experienced riders will be able to cross the Great Kei River on the ferry and day ride to Waterfalls to get a taste of the endless Wild Coast beaches.
This is the perfect horseback holiday for riders wishing to experience the pleasure of riding along the stunning beaches of the Wild Coast. You can choose a morning and afternoon ride or a full-day ride each day. Morning rides last 2 to 3 hours (or less if requested), and afternoon rides are normally shorter. Rides are tailor-made to suit the needs of guests, and Wild Coast tries to be as flexible as possible.
This trail is ideal for mixed groups of riders and families. There is plenty to do for non-riders: beautiful walks, a superb golf course, hiking and mountain bike trails, birding, river cruises, abseiling, and more are also available.
Fitness
This is a horse riding holiday, and guests should be comfortable walking, trotting, and cantering for up to 3 or 4 hours in the saddle at a time. They have a lovely selection of horses that suit a wide range of riding abilities, from novice level upward. Riding a horse does require a degree of natural fitness and balance. The weight limit is 95 kilograms; if you are over this weight but are a good rider, they have a couple of horses that can accommodate you.
Riding ability (required upon booking)
Beginner rider: Someone who is comfortable in the saddle and can stay on a reliable, well-schooled horse. They can post to the trot (rise and sit in rhythm) and may have cantered a few times. Beginners generally ride once or twice a year on holiday with their partner.
Novice rider: Someone who is comfortable in the saddle and enjoys a reliable, well-schooled horse. They generally ride at a riding school once or twice a month or like to ride a friend's horse on the farm. They can post to the trot comfortably and enjoy a nice, controlled canter.
Intermediate rider: Someone who rides regularly and enjoys a forward-going, well-schooled horse. They may or may not be a little nervous at first while getting to know their horse. They can control their horse independently and are confident trotting and cantering in a controlled manner.
Advanced rider: Someone who is comfortable on most horses in most situations. They ride regularly and may or may not have their own horse. They have a good seat and gentle hands. They can ride in a light seat and can hold a strong horse in a fast canter.
Location
All trails start and end at the Horse Yard in Kei Mouth. Kei Mouth on the Wild Coast of South Africa is a small rural holiday village on the edge of Africa. It is beautifully situated at the mouth of the Great Kei River and about 1 hour's drive from East London. The area abounds with lush vegetation, open hilltops, beautiful beaches, and crashing sea! The local people are warm and friendly, and you will be made to feel welcome.
There are many beautiful walks and hikes to explore as well as paddling and other activities provided by local guides. The horse yard is situated about 2.5 kilometers from the guest house, at the Kei Mouth Country Club; the horses live out in social herds in large paddocks.
